Compostela 2000
The European City as a Pattern. History, Validity and Future Scope
Urban design competition



The city of Santiago de Compostela,together with other eight cities, holds the European Cultural Status in in the year 2000 (Reykjavik, Bergen, Helsinki, Cracovia, Prague, Brussels, Bologna and Avignon). The Municipality and the Consortium of the City of Santiago de Compostela, have launched an Architecture and Town Planning Competition which involves professionals from Ibero America and the European Union (UE), with the purpose to develop and promote the exchange of knowledge and experience in the area of Town Planning and Architecture between the two continents.

The theme of the EUROPEAN CITY AS A PATTERN. HISTORY, VALIDITY AND FUTURE SCOPE.

Compostela 2000 is a two stages competition that gathers, around that unifying theme, nine sites in seven different countries. All of the sites propose a program of urban, social, cultural and economic needs in search of solutions and of a viability for its later fulfillment. The specific characteristics of each site will contribute with an specific sub theme within the general sub themes of the competition.

Competition sites:

Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Santiago de Cuba, Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Mexico DF, Santiago de Quertaro (Mexico), Lagos de Moreno (Mexico), Montevideo
(Uruguay)

The competition is open to architects or teams managed by architects of any of the nationalities of the Iberoamerican countries and of the European Union, or living or working in such countries. All architects participating with their own name or acting as team leaders must have a diploma in architecture and authorised to practice the profession of architect in accordance with competition rules in force in the participating countries.

This Competition is Promoted and Organized by the Consortium of the City of of Santiago de Compostela, The Municipality of Santiago de Compostela and The Office for Compostela 2000, included in the program of the Cultural City of Europe in the 2000, with the support of the Oficial Organization of Architects of Galicia.

* General Direction of Urban Development of Mexico F.D. Mexico.
* Municipality and Preservation Office of Santiago de Cuba.
* National Council for Urban Affairs (CONAU) and the Municipality of Santo Domingo. National District. Dominican Republic.
* Municipality of Rio de Janeiro. Pereira Passos Institute. Rio de Janeiro. Brazil.
* Municipality of Montevideo. Uruguay.
* Central Association of Architects and Regional Government of Buenos Aires. Argentina.

Timetable

Competition announcement and opening of registration: Jan. 12, 2000
Registration Deadline: April 28, 2000
Closing date (1st stage): June 5, 2000

Prizes:

FIRST STAGE

Each jury, set up in every country with sites in the competition, and within the dates pointed out in the timetable, will chose three entries whose creators or team of creators, will receive, through the team leader, a subvention of a minimum of 1.500 euros (or its equivalent in foreign currency) for the development of the Second Stage..

A support of a minimum of 500 euros (or its equivalent in foreign currency) will be granted to those competitors in the sphere of the EU, for travel expenses so that representatives may go to Santiago de Compostela in the final stage of the competition. This amount will be of a minimum of 1.200 euros (or its equivalent in foreign currency) for competitors from countries in Ibero America.

SECOND STAGE

The jury in Santiago de Compostela in the last week of November of 2000, will award a minimum of three prize to the value of 24.000 euros (or its equivalent in foreign currency) and and a minimum of five acknowledgements
with an endowment in cash of 4.500 euros (or its equivalent in foreign currency).
