Dream real products!




Theme: Dream real products!

In asking you to "dream real products", our aim is for you to develop new product concepts representing real innovations in design and technology which help people in their everyday lives - in the home, at work or school,
during sports and leisure activities or in the context of health and healthcare.

As in previous competitions, special emphasis is placed on teamwork. Because truly original product concepts are only possible through interdisciplinary cooperation, the BraunPrize sets out to stimulate creativity in a dynamic team environment.

You and your team are entirely free to choose your own product ideas (there is absolutely no obligation to submit entries which are relevant to the Braun product range), however, software products and interface designs are excluded from the scope of the competition.



Benefits: A milestone in your career!

The winner of the BraunPrize will receive an award of 20,000 DM (the largest single award in the history of the competition), or a six-month internship (with appropriate remuneration) in the Design Department at Braun. The six best entrants and their course leaders will be invited to the BraunPrize Event where they will have the opportunity to present their projects together. The overall winner will then be chosen by the guests at the Event. Each of the remaining five finalists will receive an award of 3000 DM.

Promoting the work of the participants is one of the principal aims of the BraunPrize. The results of the competition will be covered in the international design press as well as in print, TV and online media. Furthermore, the best entries will be shown in the BraunPrize Exhibition which will go on tour in Germany and abroad.



Taking part: An opportunity not to be missed

The competition is open to all industrial design students around the world who are still studying, and to graduates who completed their studies no more than two years ago. Where possible, students should be put forward for the competition by their course leaders at their design school. Projects featuring true interdisciplinary cooperation between different faculties are of particular interest.



Entries are submitted in two stages:

In the first stage, the jury assesses the projects on the basis of design sketches, photographs of the design model, technical drawings and a project description. These documents should be submitted in German or English. Videos and CD-ROMs may also be submitted to complement the other entry documents. If your project is selected, you will be asked to submit the design model for assessment by the jury in the second round of judging.



Closing date

All the documents for the first stage must have reached Braun by January 31st, 2001.

The Jury of the 13th BraunPrize:

Peter Schneider (Director Corporate Design at Braun and Chairman of the BraunPrize jury)
Rainer Silbernagel (Manager Product/Project Engineering at Braun)
Ross Lovegrove (Master of Design of Royal College of Art, London, and Fellow of The Chartered Society of Designers)
Chee Pearlman (Editor in Chief of I.D. Magazine, New York, and member of the board of the American Society of Magazine Editors)

The patron of the 13th BraunPrize is Bernhard Wild, Chairman of Braun.



Assessment

The jury assesses all the product concepts in accordance with the following criteria:
1. Design - in all its relevant aspects
2. Technique - the plausibility of its fulfilling the intended product function.
3. Everyday usability - on the basis of the benefit which it provides for the user.

The following additional factors are also taken into account during the assessment process:
- the feasibility with regard to processes and costs,
- a thorough analysis of the conditions on which the design is based,
- the social relevance of the product idea,
- the environmental compatibility of the product concept.

With the best projects set to be shown in an exhibition, the quality of the design model is another important factor, as is the clarity of the presentation and the way it is delivered.
