International Design Competition '00 Kainan
General Description Since 1995, Kainan City Hall has been executing various activities for design promotion aiming at activation of local industries such as lacquerware, household articles and furniture etc., and creation of new business. This year, the International Design Competition '00 Kainan is held by the Kainan City Hall and the Executive Committee of the Kainan Design Biennale followed the design competition in 1996 and 1998. It is said that commodities are not sold recently in Japan. This situation is representing that products people want are missing, however products are an important means for shaping a daily life. Design is creating attractive products which will be used in lifestyle of new generation. It is the reason why Kainan City are implementing the design competition. In Japan there are so many international living goods which were manufactured by different countries. So, the local industries of Kainan city are faced up to the competition with multi-national products and seek for the design which brings the success in a market. Therefore, Kainan intends that this International Design Competition '00 Kainan will offer an opportunity for a practical collaboration between local industry and designer. Theme Living Goods: "Lacquerware, Household Products, Furniture" - Design for product that is easy to make and to use based on characteristic of material - Schedule April 3 (Mon.) - Start applications July 25 (Tue.) - Deadline for receipt of works for first judging August beginning - First judging September 27 (Wed.) Deadline for receipt of works for final judging October beginning - Final judging November 28 (Tue.) Applying for Entrance Method of Applying for Entrance 1. First Judging - Deadline: July 25, 2000 [When applying by the panel] Prepare (1), (2) and (3) below on one B2-sized panel. (1) Sketch or drawing (2) Diagram (show scale) (3) Design concept (explanation in 500 English words or less) [Applying by the E-mail] Send items (1), (2) and (3)above by E-mail in a self-expanding compressed JPEG format file of no more than 300K. (Notes: for judging, the work will be printed on paper.) 2. Final Judging - Deadline: September 27, 2000 The entrant will prepare and send in a model of his/her work that has passed the first judging. Materials and size are at the discretion of the entrant, but weight should be no greater than 50 kilograms when fully packaged. Entered Work These must be original works that have not been announced previously and do not violate any intellectual property rights. Entrant Qualifications Any individual or group may apply no matter whether free-lance designer, in-corporate designer or design student. Number of Entries a single individual or group can enter as many works as desired. However, an application form must be submitted for each work entered. If necessary, the application form may be copied. Application Form Attach the application form to the top rear of the work (panel) that will be used in the first judging. When applying for the first judging over the E-mail, also fill in the items necessary for the application form. Responsibility for any damage to the work that occurs prior to its receipt at our offices is due to the entrant, so make sure that the entry work is properly ensured. If an entry is received in damaged condition, we will report the extent of that damage to the entrant. Storage of Works After receipt of a work, the holder of the competition will exert all caution in regard to supervision and transport, but will not assume responsibility for accident or damage that occurs due to earthquake, typhoon or other natural calamity. Notification of Result of Judging Notification of the results of the first and final judging will be sent to the entrant whose work has passed each of those judging. Rights The rights to all entry works, such as copyright and intellectual property rights, will, in principle, reside with the entrant. Consequently, the arrangements for protection of all rights should be made by the applicant him/her-self. If there is a possibility that the entry is in violation of someone else's intellectual property rights, the award may be canceled even after it has been announced. The right to display of otherwise public announce an entry work shall reside with the holder of the competition. Making the Work into a Marketable Product The making of an entry work into a marketable product shall be deliberated based on the consent of the holder of the competition within one year after the announcement, between the successful entrant and the Wakayama Lacquerware Commercial and Industrial Cooperative, the Kainan Special Home Products Cooperative and the Kainan Furniture Commercial and Industrial Cooperative who shall perform testing for making the work into a marketable product.
