3 Subject of the Competition

The subject of the competition is the planning and design aimed at the best rehabilitation of the railway station and the areas adjacent to it through the realization of a new Transportation Center and attached structures such as a workshop, washing area, bus hangar, etc., a revision of the surrounding traffic access, and the realization of a new volume of 20,000 cubic meters of residential building, parking, a restaurant with a bar, and a discotheque.

4 Background of the Competition

This competition arose from the comprehensive rethinking of the transport system of the Pusteria Valley because of the new demands of the city of Brunico - in search of new spaces to be used by youth and for local tourism - and with the intention of taking fullest advantage of the railway station which can be transformed from an element of strong division of the urban fabric to a pole of attraction which can be easily accessible to everyone.

5 Type and Structure of the Competition

The competition will be anonymous and will take place in two phases: In the first phase - ìCompetition of Ideasî - the participants in the competition will have available a very ample area of approximately 150,000 square meters. In
addition to the portrayal of the Transportation Center and attached buildings such as workshop, washing area,
bus hangar, gasoline station, etc., the candidates will be required to insert in the required projects and to place within the existing urban context: parking areas for ìPark and Rideî automobiles, for tour buses, for taxis, and for bicycles; a restaurant, a discotheque, offices, stores, and approximately 20,000 cubic meters reserved for a
residential building. It will also be necessary to consider functional connections to the new structures and to the traffic flow for the inhabitants in the broadest possible context, as well as to find solutions for overcoming
natural elements of division represented by changes in elevation or other architectonic elements of division such as the railway tracks and the current urban situation. The second phase - ìCompetition of Designî - will require the
participants accepted by the jury (a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 30) to design that which the commission considers to be possible to realize in the short term. In any case, this design will include the Transportation
Center and the attached buildings. The second phase will be specified in detail with an additional special official notice having as its guide all of the interesting suggestions that resulted from the first phase.
