Type:
Open Registration Deadline: July 12, 2000 Submission Deadline: September 27, 2000 Open to: All Entry Fee: US$75 Awards: US$15,000 Jury: Unannounced THE CHALLENGE The design challenge for this competition is in the multi-use of building(s) and the site to primarily house a place for worship and second, a place for the educational, social and athletic activities serving the fast growing congregation of Coptic (Egyptian) Orthodox Christians, residing in the Lower Hudson Valley region. The prominent location of the site in the center of this region as well as its unusual configuration of land elevations and onsite pond makes for a challenging program. Innovation in the use of Coptic art and the intelligence of connecting the program units in the design solution should be considered. THE CHURCH Virgin Mary and St. Pakhomious Coptic Orthodox Church of Lower Hudson Valley, a privately funded organization, is pleased to announce a first-time competition of its kind. This competition will challenge architects and designers worldwide to incorporate Coptic art and new technology into the design of a Coptic Church and Youth Center. Due to the growth of our congregation over the years, all the church activities were limited by a very tight space and has subsequently been reduced to the minimum. A new church with new facilities to completely house the expanding demand for space is called for. THE SITE Located in the town of Chestnut Ridge, County of Rockland, State of New York. The site lies between two properties, from the north is the Edwin Gould Foundation and from the south a commercial building occupied by a bank and law firm. The traffic access to the land is only from its east entrance on Route 45 (state highway). For more information or to register, contact: Coptic Church Design Competition P. O.
