XIITH BIENNIAL OF ARCHITECTURE OF QUITO, BAQ 2000/ CONFRONTATION







In the Patrimony City of the Humanity, from November 13TH to 17TH of 2000, the XIIth BIENNIAL OF ARCHITECTURE OF QUITO, BAQ 2000, will be developed. It is a confrontation event that gathers the work made by architects of the American continent and that is organized by the School of Architects of Ecuador, Provincial of Pichincha, under the responsibility of his Biennial's Commission.

It counts with the sponsorship of the International Union of Architects (UIA), the Regional of Architects of Andean Group (RAGA), and is an official event of the Pan-American Federation of Architects Associations (FPAA).

The Architecture Biennial of Quito, after 22 years of continuous continental integration, has obtained the national and international recognition, given the massive participation of professionals who have confronted the best of their production in the Pan-American scope.

categories and typologies of confrontation

The works executed in the continent within the period between the years 1996 and 2000, that have not taken part in previous editings of the BAQ, will be able to participate in the contest, in the following categories:

- Architectonic Design
- Urban Design
- Restoration and Rehabilitation of the Architectonic Patrimony
- History, Theory and Critic of the Architecture and Urbanism
- Magazines Specialized in Architecture, Design and Planning

In the Categories of Architectonic Design and Architectonic Rehabilitation the following typologies will be
considered:

- Housing: Constructions of individual house and collective
- Equipment: Constructions of Education, Health, Physical and Intellectual Recreation, Social welfare, Commerce, Cult, Transport, Industry and Public and Private Administration
- Interior's Design
- If the participant wishes to make emphasis in the echnological aspect of his work, will be able to indicate it in the card of inscription by using the paragraph of: Development of New Constructive Technologies.

In the Category of Urban Design the following typologies will be considered:

- Urban Plans: Generals or their stages already finished that guarantee the evaluation of their achievements and goals and,
- Landscaping Projects: Proposals linked to urban environment and the specialized projects that complement the architectonic works.

In the Categories Theory, History and Critic of the Architecture and Urbanism as well as in Specialized Magazines will be able to participate the productions of architects of the continent although they had been published outside the Pan-American context.

inscriptions and costs

Inscription Process:

An inscription card must be filled for each work in which additionally to the data of the participants and names of the project, the category and corresponding typology, as well as the shipment form must be stated.

Date limit:

All the works will be received in the CAE-P until October 13TH of 2000, reason why the participants and coordinators credited by the Organizing Commission must anticipate their shipment for this date.

Foreign participants must enclose payment and shipment confirmations by fax.

Costs for foreign architects: 75 dollars
Costs for national architects: 30 dollars

The Specialized Magazines are exempt of inscription costs.
The amounts by inscription will have to be paid to the Coordinators in each country or by means of bank pay order in favor of COLEGIO DE ARQUITECTOS DEL ECUADOR, PROVINCIAL DE PICHINCHA.

In these costs the value of the shipment is not included and the CAE-P does not take responsibility by the proceedings and costs of importation taxes, reason why it is suggested to the participants to keep adjusted to the forms of presentation and shipment of the works.

Categories Architectonic Design, Urban Design, Architectonic Rehabilitation

The works will appear in two laminae of DIN A1 format (84,1 cm x 59,4 cm) according to the attached diagram. In these laminae must be included all the graphical elements, original photographs and necessary texts for the exact understanding of the proposals.

The memory could be included, if necessary, in all laminae in the specified space.It must be enclosed, in addition of laminae, graphical files (slides) in any design program, contained in diskettes, CD-ROMs or electronic mail. It is recommended that the graphs and texts have clearness for their later publication in XIIth Biennial of Architecture of Quito Book, reason why the works will not be given back to their authors, being added to the general archives. Since the organizers prepare the form of exhibition of the works, it is prohibited that the laminae have wood formats or any other rigid and heavy material. Annexes or entire works that do not fulfill the indicated specifications will not be accepted annexed.

Category Theory History and Critic of the Architecture and Urbanism

Three originals of each publication. It is recommended to the participants that their works had the ISBN record
number.

Category Specialized Magazines

Three different issues including the data of publisher, place and date, and three original ones by each issue.
It is mandatory for all the works to be accompanied by the inscription card attached to the bases with the data correctly briefed.

Since the works will comprise the archive of the BAQ, the declaration of shipment of them, must state "without commercial value". If this requirement is not fulfilled, the School of Architects of Ecuador, Nucleus of Pichincha, does not take responsibility by the importation costs, reason why these works will not participate in the contest.

In case the works were sent outside from Ecuador:

a) Original graphs, photographs and texts contained in an envelope will be accepted, with the inclusion of the mounting scheme, subjecting to the format determined in these bases.
b) Works sent in diskettes CD and by electronic mail will be accepted. They must not be executable files (slides), but it is accepted any file format (from any graphic or design program), but to these works an additional cost to he inscription must be included. This cost is $US 40 (forty US dollars) by laminae and is destined for printing.
c) The envelope containing the work will be up to 2kg (4.4 pounds) of weight. If there is more than one work, each one has to be in a separate envelope.
d) The books and magazines up to 2kg (4.4 pounds) of weight could be sending by mail. If the weight is over 2kg (4.4 pounds) it must be handled to the country coordinator and informed to the Colegio de Arquitectos del Ecuador - Provincial de Pichincha; it must be placed on he magazine or book cover a seal or inscription reading "Es una muestra sin fines comerciales".

All the members of the Pan-American Federation of Associations of Architects will be able to participate.

In the case of works made in equipment, at least one of its members must fulfill this requirement and the jury will
understand like authors to all those that consist under that description in the card of inscription.

juries and prizes

The Biennial's Commission, at the beginning of the event, will designate the Juries integrated by members of the
UIA. The verdicts of the juries will be unquestionable. Could not be members of the Jury the habitual collaborators and the relatives in first degree of the contestants in the different categories from confrontation.

Specialized Magazines Honorary Prize

Honor Mentions in each typology will be given, in addition to the Biennial Symbol.

national contest

All the works that presented by national architects, besides to participate in the international contest, will integrate the national contest in each category and defined typologies.

Honorary Prizes in the others categories.
It will be given honor mentions in each typology and the Biennial Symbol to the winners of each one of them.
