Konstanz - A European-wide competition for the design of a common embassy has been started by students of architecture from the University of Applied Sciences in Konstanz.The student initiative Yourope* was started by Faruk Murat and Jorg Seifert on the occassion of theintroduction of the Euro.The competition is under the patronage of Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Education and Culture and is supported by UIA (Union Internationale des Architectes).
How can Europe be represented in the world? This question should inspire students to think about a possible European
identity. The task presented by the competition, therefore, is the design of an Embassy building for a politically united Europe.
Students from European universities will be summoned by Yourope to develop ideas and visions on the the political
future of Europe and to realise these in a design for a common European embassy beginning with the representation of the European idea, the organization of the individual departments and going on to the spatial conception.
The competition will be announced publicly at the beginning of October, the selection of the best models by an
international jury will take place in April 2001. The awards ceremony with an exhibition of the best models will take place in Brussels in May 2001.
The following prominent people have already agreed to act as members of the jury: Alfred Berger, the Viennese architect of the Nordic Embassy in Berlin, Andreas Hempel, Vice-President of UIA and President of the European section, Sabine Kraft, publisher of the architectural magazine arch+ and Wolfgang Riehle President of the Chamber of Architects Baden-Wurttemberg. Further European personalities including Rem Koolhaas, Santiago Calatrava, Joschka Fischer, Vaclav Havel and Alfred Grosser have been requested to act as jury members.
