Totem Design

Type: Open

Submission Deadline: November 30, 2000
Open to: All
Entry Fee: US$60 - US$30 students
Awards: Exhibition and production
Jury: Unannounced

Workspaces explores good design of work environments and work tools. It is the intention of the competition to bring forth submissions that are sensitive to the environment, inexpensive and easy to produce and that enhance and reflect the new needs of workspaces. Entrants should consider the growing use of non-traditional workspaces, including nomadic offices - e.g. airplanes, trains and cars - home offices, and virtual work environments.

Any previously unpublished project can enter. Reviewing judges may not enter work in their own judging category until the following year. Entries can be submitted by anyone who has contributed to the creative product, including designers, design firms, writers, clients, advertising agencies, photographers and illustrators. There is no limit to the number of entries.

Judges will look for excellence in two areas: performance - or how a project works to achieve its goals; and contribution - or what it adds to the repertory of design ideas. To be selected by the judges an entry must excel in one of these areas. In addition, a design must adhere to the following criteria:
1. Use of simple and inexpensive materials. The project must have a projected maximum mass production cost (to your best knowledge) of $250.
2. The materials used must be recyclable after the object's normal use.
3. It must require limited use of high technology.
4. Ability to be disassembled for ease of shipping.
5. It must be of limited size or be easy to disassemble for storage.
6. It must be beautiful and add something unique to the environment in which it is placed.
7. It must be realistic, easy to manufacture and viable for production.

How to Enter
1. Each entry must be accompanied by a check or money order made out to Totem, or a credit-card number with expiration date, along with a completed entry form. There must be one check per entry. Entry fees are US$60 each submission. Student fees are US$30 for each submission when accompanied by a photocopy of a valid ID.

2. All entries should be submitted as flat, exhibition-ready artwork mounted to 11" x 17" rigid boards (e.g. foam core). There is no maximum number of boards per submission. However, clarity and efficient use of space is important. The boards may include drawings in the form of plans/elevations, perspectives, etc. A complete set of specification drawings clearly indicating dimensions and materials. Drawings must be legible and provide sufficient information for manufacturing. No other supplementary material will be accepted. 3-D models will not be accepted. Photographs of models can however be part of the submission. Please clearly identify your name and the title of your submission on the back of all boards.

3. Application forms must be submitted. All participants are required to fill out and sign the application form in its entirety. One entry form must be included with each entry. Emailed application forms will not be accepted. There are no limits to the number of works that can be entered in the competition, but each work must be accompanied by a separate application form and check. Each individual work must be mailed in independently. PLEASE DO NOT combine entries within packages. Entries must be postmarked no later than November 30, 2000.

All entry materials become the joint property of Totem Design and cannot be returned. By entering the competition participants agree to give Totem non-exclusive right to publish accepted entries in any medium. In case of duplicate entries fees will not be returned.
