TECHNOLOGY FOR PEOPLE

international competition

Why "Technology for People"?
New products are often developed solely on the basis of technological feasibility. Far too often, the user is ignored and it is not until the technology has been fully developed that we begin to consider the user's situation and needs.

How can we encourage greater attention to human interests during the development process? How do we encourage developments within information technology, which are more in tune with human interests and needs?

The Danish telecommunications company SONOFON has thrown down the gauntlet to students, researchers, engineers, etc. - inviting them to enter an international competition that tries to answer some of these questions.

The "Technology for People" competition is part of SONOFON's efforts to promote technological developments which are more in tune with the interests and needs of the users. Information technology must be developed for people. It must be easy to use and access has to be for all.

SONOFON hopes that this competition will generate public debate about how users' interests can be transformed into a significant driving force for the technological process.

Objective

The objective of the "Technology for People" competition is to promote the development of user-friendly information technology. The entries will serve as inspiration for SONOFON's own development of user-friendly information technology.

Rules

A submission may contain a variety of content and does not have to be of a certain academic standard.
The entrant(s) must:
Consider how best to develop information technology based on human values and needs by presenting:
Either a specific piece of technology, a specific design or some tangible interface with a written explanation of how it is based on human values and needs
And/or a written proposal for a specific information technology, a specific design or a specific interface that underpins human values and needs
And/or a written submission about which human values and needs should form the basis of new information technology

Entries may be based on a variety of perspectives:
Technological
Philosophical/humanist
Sociological
Design

SONOFON aims to encourage different disciplinary groups to co-operate in developing solutions. This is not, however, a precondition for entering the competition.
Entries may also be based on a new, better defined or more focused view of human nature, which may be necessitated by the way in which technology develops.
All submissions must be accompanied by the following information:
Project title
Name, title/academic position of entrant
Contact name
Address
Telephone number
Fax number
E-mail
Description of the constituent parts of the submission (e.g. "5 pages of text and 1 model")

Criteria

SONOFON's "Technology for People" competition has a definite interdisciplinary aspect and encourages researchers and students from technical subjects to co-operate with researchers and students from the humanities, the social sciences and design disciplines.

Entries do not have to be submitted by groups of people from more than one academic discipline. However, they will be assessed on the basis of the presenter's ability to explain the project in an interdisciplinary manner.

Prizes

Submissions will be assessed by a panel of judges and the three best will win:
1st prize, $15,000
2nd prize, $10,000
3rd prize, $5,000

The three winners will be invited to receive their prizes at a ceremony in Denmark. SONOFON will cover any costs incurred.
