Type: Open, student Registration Deadline: March 10, 2001 Submission Deadline: April 27, 2001 Open to: 3rd year or higher Entry Fee: None Awards: US$5,750 Total Jury: Lawrence Booth, Ralph Johnson, James Nagle, James Jankowski and Carlos Campos This metal-in-construction design competition challenges entrants to address architectural, environmental, and functional issues in the design of a Chicago Transit System elevated station utilizing sheet metal components and metal structural members. An important Chicago traffic intersection is the site for the elevated station. Entrants are to design an elevated station that meets the needs of transit users providing a sense of place for the intersection and community, and that also is suited to the environment that surrounds it. In designing the elevated station, entrants must take into account the ways in which metal can enhance the overall appeal and functionality of the station. Entrants are encouraged to study both existing urban transportation systems and the properties of metal components to determine how these components can best be adapted to the project. Materials should be featured prominently in major exterior components, and used as the primary structural materials, with the resonable use of other materials permitted as necessary. The design should underscore the efficiency and the effectiveness of metals in responding to the day to day operational requirements of the facility.
