TIBURTINA STATION INTERCHANGE

international design competition

The purpose of the Competition is to plan a completion project for the station and part of public and private services foreseen by the Development Plan for the Tiburtina station area.

In its final guise the new interchange envisions the construction of the new Tiburtina station, along with a service complex offering road/rail exchange, public/private, urban/suburban, and the realization of the elaborate system of directional, commercial, hospitality and cultural functions envisioned by the Development Plan for this new urban centrality. The interchange, in its bipolar functional development, envisions a series of plazas and pathways, or welcome areas, service, refreshment and commercial areas, harmoniously organized in standard and innovative services, according to the most modern principles of information, functionality, comfort, hygiene, security, efficiency and sustainability. As for the new Tiburtina station, to-date only one stage - Stage 2000 - has been completed. It includes:
- the frame of the railway crossing deck;
- the extension of the rail underpass to reach the Pietralata side;
- refitting the platforms and roofing in first phase.

In order to complete of the new station, the following will have to be planned, in an executive design:
- the bridge station and related service areas on the framework already constructed;
- the west side of the Nomentano interchange pole, restructuring and extending the present station building on the Nomentano side;
- the east side Nomentano interchange pole;
- relocation of the station services as well as the internal and external links, in particular those with east and west station platforms, the nearby public and private services of the three acro-areas that constitute the new Tiburtina station Interchange, namely the Nomentano west pole, the Pietralata east pole and the bridge station.

The principal functions will be: interchange access and exchange systems, public services, information and communication services, public and administrative services, technical/operational services. Within the planning context, we envision practical connections to the contiguous compartments on the east side and compartment C3, on the Tiburtina side, and the bus station on the west side, as well as the east and west platforms.
The entire project, in terms of the present urban context, must adapt to the environment dictated by the preexisting historical structures, incorporating the various track overpasses, in the reshaping of the public spaces, and in the harmonious use of the green spaces relinquished by the city, to become the core of the greater Pietralata park. In the first stage the competitors have to send a single package containing:
- an album in A3 format, in two copies, containing the design considerations and the relevant charts;
- graphic plans of the design proposal, in two copies, that must be presented in a maximum of 6 tables, A1 format, containing technical drawings, expressing the approach to the Competition's object.
