| TORINO PORTA SUSA design competition |

| Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian Railways Company) have announced a competition for the design of the new Turin Porta Susa station Passenger Terminal and an adjacent tower block. Italian Railways are enhancing the railway system in Turin, with the help of the City Council. Among the changes being made are a four-track underground urban railway and the building of new stations. The object of the competition is for a preliminary design of the Passenger Terminal, about 15,000 sqm in area, for the new Turin Porta Susa station, and a tower block, about 35,000 sqm in floor area, for receptions and offices. This tower block will be built on the site of the current freight terminal. About 40 million Euro will be invested in the building of the Passenger Terminal. This competition, together with that for Rome Tiburtina station announced in March, re-opens the railways series of competitions which, up until the mid-fifties, made possible the building of significant modern architectures in several Italian cities. The competition will take place in two stages. The first, open, stage requires ideas for the design set out in a paper and six tables. Seven of the designs will be chosen on the basis of these papers and admitted to the second stage of the competition, for which preliminary designs for both buildings are required. Information about the competition was published on May 10th. Participants entries must be registered by July 2nd. Papers for the first stage must be submitted by September 3rd. Projects by second-stage participants must be submitted within five months of submitting the first-stage paper. The winner will receive a prize of Lit. 480,000,000 (247,899.31 Euro). Other second-stage participants, who submit projects as requested, will receive a prize of Lit. 65,000,000 (33,569.70 Euro). The winner will, if in possession of all the competition requisites, be entrusted with the task of the final design and building of the Passenger Terminal.
