O'CONNELL STREET FURNITURE

Two Stage Competition
Dublin, Ireland

Dublin Corporation as part of its O’Connell St. Integrated Area Plan is seeking the design of a range of retail vending and information kiosks and public conveniences to be located in O’Connell St as part of the overall upgrading of the street. To this end it proposes a two stage design competition for the kiosks. (O’Connell Street Integrated Area Plan.)

The Integrated Area Plan proposes through a comprehensive series of interventions to improve the physical, social, infrastructural and economic environment of O’Connell St and its immediate surrounding areas.

The physical changes planned for O’Connell St itself include a major restructuring of traffic movements through the street to eliminate through traffic other than public transport and reduce the carriageways to two lanes and a bicycle lane in either direction. This permits widening the footpaths to approximately double their existing width and restoring the street from a traffic clogged artery to a pedestrian friendly, modern, cosmopolitan thoroughfare. The plan proposes repaving the footpaths and median for the full length of the street, providing new trees at the pavement edges and on the median, to create a boulevard of grandeur and elegance. At the General Post Office, it is proposed to create a centerpiece plaza extending the full width of the street, paved in granite and enclosed formally on three sides by pleached trees. New lighting, street furniture and tax incentives for shop front improvement form an integral part of the improvement plan.
