| HELP MFI TAKE THE KITCHEN INTO THE 21ST CENTURY HOME |

| The RIBA Competitions Office, in association with MFI, the UK’s leading retailer and manufacturer of kitchens and bedrooms, has launched a new competition for the design of ‘The Kitchen in the 21st Century Home’. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate discussion about the next-generation kitchen and set this into the wider context of the 21st century home environment. The kitchen has evolved to become the centre of the family home, and is being used more and more frequently for a whole range of different uses. Entrants will be asked to look at how changes in technology and society have resulted in a shift of emphasis in domestic functions and zones to incorporate different daytime activities. The competition is based on a typical 3-bedroom house or flat. Competitors will be requested to submit their design proposals on a maximum of two A2 lightweight foam boards. Whilst the competition is a call for ideas only, MFI may build the winning designs as part of its exhibition activity and/or may build the winning design to display in stores around the country to promote the competition. Eligibility: The competition is open internationally to registered architects, designers and students. Jury Panel: The jury panel will include promoter representatives, Seth Stein of Seth Stein Architects acting on behalf of the RIBA and a celebrity judge to be announced. Prizes: 1st prize £4,000; 2nd £2,000; 3rd £1,000. Submission deadline: 31st August 2001 Registration: To register and receive a copy of the competition brief, a cheque for £8.00 (inc. VAT) for professionals should be sent to the RIBA Competitions Office, made payable to ‘RIBA Competitions’. VAT receipts are available upon request. The brief is free to students.
