New York City, Queens Museum of Art Type: Open, two-stage Registration Deadline: July 16, 2001 Submission Deadline: August 31, 2001 Open to: Architects Entry Fee: US$75 Awards: Design Commission Jury: Ben Van Berkel, Laurene Buckley, David Childs, Susan Chin, Merrill Elam, Enrique Norten and Anne Papageorge New York City's Department of Design and Construction, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Queens Museum of Art, is pleased to announce a national design competition for an expansion to the Queens Museum of Art. Located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the museum was founded in 1972 and is dedicated to presenting the highest quality visual arts and educational programming for people in the New York metropolitan area. It is particularly dedicated to serving the residents of Queens, a uniquely diverse ethnic, cultural, and international community. The Queens Museum of Art expansion project has been approved and funded by the City of New York. The goal of this competition is to select an architect to design an expansion to the Queens Museum of Art. The design challenge facing the competitors is to create an innovative expansion strategy for the museum meeting its unique goals and mission, and amplifying the dramatic opportunities afforded by its historic building and site. The current museum occupies the northern half of the existing New York City Building, the only surviving structure from both the 1939 and 1964 world's fairs. The expansion of the museum into the entire building will effectively double the museum's size from 45,000 to approximately 100,000 square feet. The grand open space of the building's southern half presents a unique opportunity to display contemporary art; the development of this double height, free span central space will enable the museum to encompass any art medium, many audiences, and many different kinds of programming, and will enhance the museum's ability to become a major player in the fast-changing contemporary art world. Eligibility: This is a two-stage, national design competition. The competition format asks competitors to submit their concept ideas in Stage I, and for the jury to select five competitors who will each receive an honorarium to produce more detailed projects in Stage II. Stage I of the competition is open to all individuals licensed to practice architecture in the United States, or teams led by an individual so licensed. Because it is the Sponsor's intent to award the project to the competition winner, Stage II competitors must include on their team, at the time of submission, at least one individual licensed to practice architecture in New York State. To register for this competition, and receive a copy of the Competition Conditions, Drawings, and Photos, submit a completed Registration Form, along with a cashier's or certified check in the amount of $75 payable to the NYC Department of Design and Construction.
