SWISS NATIONAL MUSEUM RENOVATION AND EXPANSION |

Call for entries based on the Federal Law on Public Procurement Client: Swiss Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics (BBL) Project Management Department Holzikofenweg 36 CH – 3003 Berne Competition task: Renovation and Expansion of the Swiss National Museum, Zurich (CH) Built between 1892 and 1898, the „Schweizerisches Landesmuseum“ (Swiss National Museum) finds itself in poor condition and in dire need of a comprehensive renovation. A new building is to provide additional floorspace of approx. 4‘000m2 for administration and exhibition purposes. The basic concept for architecture and administration of the museum has to be redefined: the distribution of functions between the existing and the new building is to be reconsidered within the framework of the given museum concept. The project-competition is organized on the basis of the insights gained from the ideas-competition which was held in the fall of 2000. The competition‘s goal is to determine a realizable project that optimally satisfies the diverse requirements of a modern museum. The client is aware of the project’s urbanistically prominent and sensitive location. Especially the immediate vicinity to the central train station, the „Platzspitz“ park and the rivers Sihl and Limmat is to be taken into account. The existing museum was ideologically, functionally and architecturally conceived as the Swiss National Museum. Relocating the function to a different site would rob the building of its identity. Because of the high quality and sensitivities of the site the government has reaffirmed the continuation of the museum at its present location. The participants are therefore expected to exhibit respect and to apply great care in dealing with the historically certified building and park. The client, however, also expects to receive innovative and concrete solutions to the complex problems arising from the combination of renovation and expansion. The solutions are expected to establish the museum as a cultural and social node for the next decades, while weaving it into the existing urban fabric. Building areas: Existing building approx. 16.000m2 New building approx. 4.000m2 Expected investment: approx. 100 Mio CHF Competition procedure: Project-competition with selective procedure based on the Federal Law on Public Procurement (BoeB) and the corresponding decree (VoeB). Deadline for submission of application to participate: The submission of the application documents has to take place at the latest by Friday, August 3, 2001, 5:00pm at: Ufficio federale delle costruzioni e della logistica Gestione progetti 3 via Pioda 10 CH - 6901 Lugano Switzerland For applications sent by mail or courier the date of the postmark or equivalent proof are decisive.
