THE MODERN JOURNEY
accessibility on public transport
Nordic Design Competition

Travel on public transport is a necessity if society is to run smoothly. More and more people realise that a great deal is to be won both environmentally and in terms of time spent on travel on public transport. Many people are quite simply not in a position to use public transport today. Amongst others, this applies to people with different kinds of functional dis-ability, as well as to parents with small children and a growing number of senior citizens. In order to encourage progress towards travelling habits which are in line with modern demands for accessibility, a better quality of life and socio-economic commitments, the Nordic Council on Disability Policy, in conjunction with the Nordic Ministries of Transport, has decided to arrange a Nordic Design Competition in 2001.

Competition period April 4 - December 14, 2001.

What is the objective?
The objective is to develop public transport into a modern means of travel that encourages more people to use it. It may relate to vehicles for road, rail, air and sea but also to other products, such as payment systems and information displays, which are all part and parcel of the trip. The newly developed products are intended to co-exist with existing products so that the favourable experience of the journey will be improved. Competition entries should be well thought out and well developed so that it would be possible to produce a prototype based on the submitted material.

Who can take part?
Students of design
Designers of all disciplines

Opening conference in Copenhagen
The competition will be launched with a conference April 4, 2001 at the Danish Design Centre in Copenhagen, at which prominent representatives from the field of transport research and design will share their knowledge and competence with the participants. The objective is to provide a stimulus for the new ways of thinking that the competition is expected to generate. The closing date of the competition is December 14, 2001. The winners will be announced at a conference in Helsinki in April 2002.
