In the summer of 2001, the first edition of Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial produced worldwide publicity and attracted over 160,000 visitors. Inspired by natural settings and local lives, the 148 artists from 32 countries created site-specific works of art, which provide foresight for the new age.

The second edition, scheduled for the summer of 2003, will exhibit almost 100 new works in addition to over 60 existing works. With the theme “Human Beings as a Partof Nature”, the exhibition will be an inter-genre showcase of a wide range of media from fine arts to gardening, ceramic art, film and photography. This competition is to select in two phases seven artists of different media who will be commissioned to create a work of art site-specifically for seven sites in Echigo-Tsumari. Applicants are expected to make proposals that could draw out the potential of the place and build relationships between the place and people.
