The Los Angeles County Natural History Museum Foundation seeks a Design
Architect for its New Museum project.

The New Museum will set international standards for museum design. The building will be a landmark architectural home for the institution, combining the historic heart of the current building with stunning new architecture. It will model sustainable design principles in an architecture that minimizes environmental degradation, regenerates natural resources, and inspires stewardship of the natural world. The physical boundaries between the building interior and its environment will be blurred, encouraging the user to ponder the connections between self, community, and world. The design will make the Museums collections accessible to the public, will integrate the human and natural sciences, and will enable fluid, relevant exhibitions appropriate to our changing times. It will speak to and of the Los Angeles regions place on the planet, highlighting the parallels between its peoples and environments, and those of the greater world. Above all, the New Museum will embody our mission to inspire wonder, discovery and responsibility for our natural and cultural worlds.

The New Museum project is located on 14 acres within the 160 acre Exposition Park, just south of downtown Los Angeles. The area is home to a number of cultural institutions including the California Science Center, California African-American Museum, a science and math elementary school, a community center, and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The campus of the University of Southern California faces the Park on its north side. Many of these institutions are embarking on ambitious and exciting building projects, contributing to the revitalization of the Park and of downtown Los Angeles.

The New Museum project proposes the replacement/reconstruction of the existing 410,000 sf building, including the demolition of major portions of the existing structure and preservation of remaining historic portions. In addition, 80,000 sf of offsite facilities will be relocated to the Museum site.

The proposed schedule for this project expects the New Museum to be completed and operational by December 2009. The estimated building construction cost is $100,000,000, with an additional $45,000,000 allocated for construction of exhibitions. (The Museum is aware that this is an aggressive budget; we want the architect to work with us to find strategies to achieve high design quality within cost constraints.) We anticipate annual attendance at the New Museum of over 1 million people.

Through the process outlined in this document, the Museum intends to select the firm best able to provide design services for this project. This Request for Qualifications (RFQ) asks for the Design Architect only (henceforth referred to as Architect in this document). The subsequent Request for Proposals (RFP) may require the submission of a design team, including Executive Architect and consultants. This will be an open selection; responses from all qualified firms will be carefully considered. Selection will be complete by the summer of 2002.
