Grand Prix US$20,000, Opportunity to participate in the Hanssem Design Venture Team.
Creation of a new space for the one child family in this era of urbanization and information age is "acute".

Hanssem Co. Ltd., the top furniture & interiors distributor in Korea, is presenting the 2nd DBEW International Design Competition followed by last year.

On 20th March, Hanssem Co. Ltd. (President: Yang-Ha Choi) has announced that they are presenting the 2nd DBEW International Design Competition with the theme of "Design beyond East & West for the One Child Family" in order to develop best-seller designs and find original and new designers, and accepting submissions until the 17th September, 2002.

Last year, the 1st year competition with the theme of "Design beyond East & West" brought about great attention both in Korea and overseas because it was the first large scale event which included fields of architectural design, interior design, and furniture design.

The person concerned at the Design & Research Center of Hanssem explains about competition’s theme of this year as follows, "with the advent of urbanization and fast influx of information, the function and role of a family is also changing" and says, "as working women are fast growing, having one child only, so called the ‘Dual Income Single Child Family’ is becoming the most common type and we are at the stage where the creation of a new atmosphere is required which is best suited to these changes".

The theme of this year, "DBEW for the Dual Income Single Child Family" is in step with the current social changes such as the shared housework between men and women and the reduced workload of the housewife through easy usages of electronic appliances. In the one child family, all the members usually go out in the morning to work or school work and return home in the evening. That is, all 3 members are active and a new living environment which corresponds to this lifestyle is required.

Therefore Hanssem has found three key words which may lead the creation of a new convenient living space for the 21st Century.

The first keyword is " digitalized space ". The domain of control over time and space which Internet usage imposes is increasing. Pursuit of digitalized space design, "Design for Digitalized Space" is required. This new space must also coincide with the individual desires of each family member and must be created as a space where communication, cooperation and binding among family members can harmoniously take place.

The second keyword is "kitchen culture". An intelligent kitchen may be a cooking space where utility and convenience are adapted to a kitchen, yet now, a cultural meaning should be added to the kitchen, as a space where family members gather and share their warm talks together. In other words, the kitchen is a SPACE ADAPTED TO LIFE. The so-called "CULTURAL KITCHEN", as a new concept, is expected to be a small cultural plaza for family members.

The third keyword is a "new inner environment for children". Various media such as Internet, multi-media, and multi-channel TV are giving our children a wider range of choices. Also, as the general living standard improves, children have access to a greater amount of furniture and products in their rooms and their physical growth patterns are changing. The relationship between parents and children, body and furniture, mass of information and products, space and spirit have to be re-established. To nurture the healthy, original and competent leaders of our future, a "Creative Kid Room" must be proposed.

This competition is open to anyone, either individual or as a member of a team, irrespective of country of domicile, gender, profession, major or otherwise. Also the judging panel consists of five world renown designers in the fields of modern architecture and design such as Mr. Alessandro Mendini of Italy and Mr. Arata Isozaki of Japan.

The representative of Hanssem explains, "Hanssem is expanding into the world market. Our aim is to advance into China market and secure a bridgehead in the North Eastern Asian market." And adds firmly, "Through this competition, we plan to seek professional manpower and cultivate them into world-widely competent designers."

Followed by last year, this year’s application notice, guidelines, information, and all related resources can be found in the official website (www. hanssemcompe.com). Hanssem has already announced its application notice, decided upon the juries, and is seeking to communicate with the competition applicants through various Q&As.

The 2nd DBEW International Design Competition aims for a total housing concept and is divided into 3 categories: *architectural design for an apartment house unit for the dual income single child family *interior design for the dual income single child family *furniture design for the dual income single child family. The deadline for submissions is 6:00pm on 17th September 2002 and the announcement of judging results will be made on 10th Oct.2002.

Hanssem is willing to pay royalty to the winners in case the applied works become commercially marketed, and moreover, for applicants who have applied works of high marketability, regardless of winning an award, the company has a plan to provide them with opportunities to participate in the Hanssem Design Venture Project.
