International ideas competition for the design of Graphisoft Park conference center in Budapest (Hungary) Graphisoft announces an international ideas competition, open and anonymous, for the design of a new conference center on the site of its world headquarters. With a population of 2.5 million, Budapest is one of the most important business centers in Central Europe. Graphisoft Park was conceived and constructed in Budapest to nurture the region's software development business into a thriving industry. Located on a 7.5-hectare site alongside the Danube and facing a nature conservation area, the Park's high-tech buildings of brick, glass and steel are in visual harmony with the protected historic industrial buildings that remain on the site. When complete in 2004, the park will contain 15 low-rise office buildings totaling more than 25,000 sq. meters, leaving more than 80% of the site open for plants, trees and lawn. The proposed conference center presents a unique challenge for architects: to design the first known structure to be situated over one of Europe's most important waterways. Flowing from the Black Forest in Germany to the Black Sea in Romania, the Danube represents a literal and symbolic linking of Eastern and Western Europe. With its Roman remains and Gothic Castle, the waterfront in the city of Budapest is a World Heritage site. A remaining pair of old industrial pillars in the river at Graphisoft Park offers the exceptional opportunity to build this 350 sq. meter conference center above the river. The Graphisoft Park Conference Center will be dedicated to the architectural profession, and used to host architectural design exhibitions, conferences for the international ArchiCAD and ArchiFM user communities, and other major events promoting architecture as well as Graphisoft's products and technologies. Graphisoft is developer of ArchiCAD, an industry-leading architectural CAD solution and ArchiFM, an integrated facility management application.
