THE SQUARE OF MONIGA DEL GARDA

International design competition of ideas for students of European and extra European schools and universities of architecture, design and engineering.

URBAN BUILDING SETTLEMENT OF SAINT MARTINO SQUARE AND NEIGHBOURING AREAS

SUBJECT OF THE CONTEST

The MUNICIPALITY of MONIGA DEL GARDA promotes collaboration terms with the Italian and foreign Universities considering the contribution of young persons potentially more innovative.
The contest is aiming at the object to compare the planning and designing capacity produced by the university teaching method with the concrete themes of the actual architectonic debate, themes that have enriched the aspects of research and experimentation in the connection between public space and architecture. It is required a planning answer to the design of the public space, which is living to-day a crisis of identity due to its own nature: a crisis to which architects and artists often wished to put a remedy through the rebuilding of the sense and/or of the quality of the design.
The environment of Moniga del Garda takes a great interest in instances of urban retraining for a project of development of the tourist aspects and of improvement of the town.
Attention paid on the redesign of public areas ( squares and streets ) exceed the limits of the themes connected with the urban decoration. It’s really a question to offer an innovative portrait of Moniga, the value of tourist Moniga is searched for: that’s what the contest will take in charge even doubting consolidated and experienced models.
Urban retraining of the areas marked in the plans of: San Martino square, area of the town Hall, area at north of same town Hall, neighbouring infrastructures of next realization, represent a chance of urban transformation.
In the planning choices two physical limits of space of the new square take on great importance: on one side Carlo Alberto street, San Martino square and the town Hall; on the other side the realization of a new building area with the relevant infrastructures; works started not long ago ( see the attached graphs ).
The building of the town Hall, that stands on the area ( marked in plan ), has dimensions no more enough to the new exigencies. Consequently to the need of a substantial remaking, participants are free to imagine its transformation, elimination or to suggest a new placing. It’s precisely said that the theme of the town Hall is subject of the contest only for the indicative placing.
The image of untidiness of present situation is openly felt by the visitor who runs across said sites.
The need to propose shapes, materials, colours and sounds able to provoke sensations (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory ) fit to identify the place as an element of recognition of the commercial and representative function, has the purpose to involve people in a sequence of spaces enriching the offer of amusement inside the urban area. It’s therefore clear that the lighting, the paving, the trees and bushes, the elements of decoration, the sculptures and everything is placed in the street and in the square take on a role different from the mere functional aspect.
The graphic choice is absolutely free.
Candidates are free to suggest planning choices also beyond the limits proposed by the contest but
it’s specified that only the proposal relating the contest’s area is subject to evaluation. It’s moreover specified that concerning the contest no technical and economical limits are supplied; it’s in any case clear that the proposals must be technically realizable.
The candidate is asked for his contribution at the purpose of a concrete culture of project, tackled from the Architectonic scale up to the scale of Design, taking into consideration the tendencies of technological, typological, sociological order that the new society demands. Candidates are required to imagine architectures, spaces and objects radically different from present spaces and urban decorations, often disappointing, unchaining their imagination around a theme in full evolution.
