STOCKPORT TOWN CENTRE COMPETITION

Stockport Chamber of Commerce and Industry has joined forces with the RIBA, Stockport Council, Merseyway Shopping Centre and the North West Development Agency to launch an exciting design competition to give a new look to part of Stockport Town Centre.

The competition is set to raise the town's profile in the region, and involves producing a vision to guide a facelift for St Peter's Square and Mersey Square.

While the town centre is a thriving trading location, the area covered by the competition is linked by the Plaza steps and faces a number of challenges:

- There are some under-used buildings, many of which face away from Mersey Square
- There is a need for more landscaping features
- The area should have an overall theme
- Pedestrian routes should be improved

President of Stockport Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr Malcolm Hurst, said "We are very pleased to be able to develop this initiative. A thriving and exciting town centre is an important part of Stockport's prosperity. We hope this competition will show that we all mean business here in Stockport. We are grateful that the Council, the North West Development Agency and Merseyway Shopping Centre are able to join us in sponsoring this RIBA Competition."

Councillor Mark Hunter, Stockport Council Leader, said "Stockport is a highly successful town centre, but parts of it will benefit from regeneration. The Council is firmly commited to an M60 Gateway Strategy, which sets down how we intend to regenerate the town centre and its surroundings. This proposed urban design competition will raise Stockport's profile and provide us with a high quality vision for the future of this important area."

Eligibility: The competition is open internationally to registered architects, landscape architects, urban designers and students of these disciplines.

Jury Panel: The jury panel will include Jason Prior of EDAW and John Lyall of John Lyall Architects acting as advisers on behalf of the RIBA. Local people will also be asked for their views on the competition entries before the final decision and prizes are announced in March.

Prizes: 1st: £4,000; 2nd £2,000; 3rd £1,000

Submission Deadline: Tuesday 18 February 2003

Registration: To register and receive a copy of the competition brief (available from mid-December), please send a cheque for £35.00 inc. VAT (professionals) or £7.50 inc. VAT (students), payable to RIBA Competitions, to 6 Melbourne Street, Leeds, LS2 7PS. VAT receipts are available upon request.
