Architects
with good design skills and an interest in working and designing for
the local community are invited to take part in two new open designcompetitions.
The competitions, organised on behalf of the London Borough of Newham,
will form part of the regeneration of the Brooks Estate in Plaistow,
London.
Competition one will involve the refurbishment of low-rise housing
on the estate where entrants will be required to examine the outside
appearance of dwellings, their orientation, and the overall use of
the land which they occupy.
The second competition seeks designs for the refurbishment of two
high-rise housing tower blocks on the estate.
Both
competitions will be open and judged anonymously, and the three winners
to the competitions - the winner of the low rise dwellings and one
winner each for the two tower blocks will be commissioned to deliver
the schemes through to completion.
A total £42,000 in prize money will be awarded.
The judging panels for the two competitions include architects
Christophe Egret, Nicholas Boyarsky, Sarah Wigglesworth, and Wilfred
Achile.
Said
Kamal Faizi, Director of Newham Housing Regeneration "This exciting
design process shows how serious we are about changing the way we
design and create homes for people that will engender pride and ownership
from those that live there. It is about creating communities and making
a contribution to civic pride. The challenge for this competition
is to find the right balance between innovation and sustainability.
The Council and New Deal for Communities want to see how architects
will deal with our ambitions for our estates and how they can make
a real difference".
Deadline
for submission of designs is 19th August 2003.
