When lightning strikes it is a release of tension between two points,
an automatic reaction. We can see the same "flow" of energy through
an interaction application when interaction design is at its best.
It can be a release of something as powerful as "love at first sight"
- an inspiration which leads to wonderful inventions.
On Monday 14 June Interaction Design Institute Ivrea organises its
second Graduation Ceremony. Twenty graduating students, coming from
Brazil, Colombia, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, India, Israel, Italy,
Liechtenstein, Norway, Sweden and USA, will be awarded the Masters
in Interaction Design. The event, which takes place at the Interaction-Ivrea
building from 10:00 to 13:00, features speeches by Claudio Ciborra
of the London School of Economics, Peter Cook, director of the Bartlett
School of Architecture in London, and Sergio Escobar, director of
Milan's Piccolo Teatro. This second Graduation Ceremony - the first
one took place in 2003 - underlines the solidity of the Institute's
teaching activities, confirms its cultural continuity and reinforces
its international visibility.
Prior to the graduation ceremony, students will present their thesis
projects in the exhibition When Lightning Strikes - a display of fanciful
interaction design inventions for the future. The two-day exhibition
features prototypes, service projects and computer simulations, some
of which have already been exhibited - to great public and critical
acclaim - at the Triennale of Milan during this year's Furniture Fair.
Visitors can discuss the projects directly with the students and see
how technology can improve daily life. The exhibition, which is free
and open to the public, takes place on Friday 11 June from 15:00 to
22:00 and on Saturday 12 June from 11:00 to 19:00 at Interaction Design
Institute Ivrea, Via Montenavale 1, Ivrea. The projects can also be
seen online at www.interaction-ivrea.it.
Interaction-Ivrea invites all to the Graduation Party on Saturday
12 June, starting at 21:30, at the Talponia Student Residence, Via
Carandini 6, Ivrea. "Talponia", which was designed by the architects
Gabetti and Isola between 1969 and 1974, is a semi-circular building
with a huge window area, which will be transformed in a large light
and colour display during the party.
Interaction Design Institute Ivrea (Interaction-Ivrea) is an independent
non-profit association, founded by Telecom Italia and Olivetti, and
now part of the Progetto Italia initiative of Telecom Italia. Based
in Ivrea, it offers a two-year Masters Programme in Interaction Design
for participants from all over the world with prior college degrees
in design, architecture, communications, computer science or psychology.
Admission is based on a thorough selection process. Scholarships are
available for those accepted.
Interaction-Ivrea acts - through its two-year Masters Programme and
the innovation projects that are carried out independently or in partnership
with Italian and international businesses - as a cultural centre for
extending and disseminating interaction design knowledge and know-how.
It aims to develop the culture of interaction design, which originally
emerged in Silicon Valley, in a European context, building particularly
on Italy's heritage and present strengths in design, innovation and
lifestyle. In doing this, it forges a distinctively Italian fusion
of technology, service models, and design for products and services.
