The
international conference scheduled to take place in the "Agudos Seminary"
(Agudos, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil) is the outcome of the collaboration
between Unesp (Universidade Estadual Paulista) and the research doctorate
in "History of Architecture and Cities, Science of Art and Restoration"
of the SSAV (Institute for Advanced Studies in Venice).
The occasion is the celebration of two major events in the history
of urban planning: the centenary of the death of Camillo Sitte (celebrated
on November 16, 2003) and the publication in 1904 of the first town
planning review, Der Städtebau, founded by Sitte and Theodor
Goecke.
The general aim of the conference is to encourage comparative research
in Europe and Latin America in the formative years of town planning
studies. In this context, the conference provides a valuable opportunity
for scholars, students and researchers from both continents to meet
and exchange knowledge and information, in the hope of promoting common
research agendas. The Brazilian conference "Camillo Sitte and the
circulation of ideas on urban aesthetics. Europe and Latin America:
1880-1930" is considered by its organisers a continuation of the international
conference titled "Camillo Sitte and his followers" held in Venice
in 1990 (organised by Guido Zucconi), with the additional contribution
of the recent results of the "Camillo Sitte Symposium" held in Vienna
in November 2003.
Camillo Sitte, Charles Buls, Raymond Unwin, Werner Hegemann, Albert
Brinckmann and Thomas Mawson are among the most famous personalities
involved in the urban planning debate of this period, especially with
regard to urban aesthetics. Stadtbaukunst, Art de batir les ville,
Civic Art, Arte urbana, City Beautiful, Art Public, Arte
di costruire la cittą, Estetica edilizia are some of the terms used
to define and express the concern of architects and town planners
with the aesthetic dimension of the city during these years.
How and to what extent did this widespread interest in urban aesthetics
influence town planning practice in the various European and Latin
American cities? By examining some case studies we can determine the
links between circulation of ideas, urban planning models and their
national interpretations. In other words, we can evaluate the importance
of concepts such as Gustavo Giovannoni's "diradamento", of famous
plans like those of Camillo Sitte himself, of Theodor Fischer, Eliel
Saarinen and Steen Eiler Rasmussen, of particularly influential schools
and personalities, reviews and handbooks. In short, our intention
is a discussion at international level on the circulation of ideas
with regard to urban aesthetics that is the origin of a widespread
concern with town planning as artistic endeavour.
More specifically, the Conference will be divided into the following
sessions: First Session: Camillo Sitte and his work. Second Session:
European case studies presented and discussed on national bases. Third
Session: North and South American case studies presented and discussed
per country.
