Bionic Territories
International Festival "Architecture and New Media"

October 19 - 22, 2000, Faculty of Architecture, Ljubljana - Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana

The International Festival Architecture and New Media under the title Bionic Territories, organized by Monochrome - Office for Architecture and Film with the co-operation of the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana and the Faculty of Architecture in Florence, is a dynamic mixture of lectures, video projections and projects awarded within the bounds of the competition. In Slovenia, this festival is the first attempt of a systematic presentation of architecture in relation to modern technologies. Through media, architecture becomes 'media' architecture establishing direct communication with the surroundings and enabling greater popularization of architecture. And finally, architecture can be seen as film, through time and movement.

WHY BIONIC TERRITORIES?

Dynamic social, economic, information and transport currents are one of the characteristics of the 20th century. They change the static image of the world. The idea of a moving city structure and architecture is first adopted by a group of architects in the first half of the century. They see progress, motion, speed and beauty in the technology of machines and in means of transport. The concept of the moving structure is then particularly renowned in the sixties. New technologies that stem from existing NASA projects, the development of media, science fiction and popular culture influence urban planning and regeneration, the new architecture. Today, we are again dealing with the redefinition of architecture and the city, challenged by the information revolution. Planned territorial shifts have been replaced by the new environments of telecommunication networks and systems that offer velocity, simultaneity and unlimited communication. The world has become smaller and the human being has grown. People are no longer interested in static architectural shells, but rather in dynamic spatial attires. Modern bodies are being formed, made of digital and mechanic devices that are the result of the analyses of biological processes and the foresight of contemporary technological laboratories. They have the characteristics of shrinking and expanding, growth and extension, their unit of measure is time. They form new environments that with their devices break down the static laws of space. These are new biotopes, dynamic spaces in motion - bionic territories.

VIDEO PROJECTIONS
selection from the 1999 edition of the International Festival for Architecture in Video, Florence

The design process, from initial analyses to the project development, and also the presentation and documentation of architecture, is changing with new technologies. Drawings, plans and spatial models were replaced by virtual models, computer animations and video projections, enabling us to see architecture through time and movement. Instalation at the Museum of Modern Art is a presentation of the projects by more than twenty architects applying new technologies into their work. Some of the authors are the following: the Ortlos group, youngest participants at this year´s Venice Architecture Biennial, projects of the controversial New York tandem Diller+Scofidio, series of virtual simulations of the 'architectural star' Zaha Hadid and digital environments by Ben van Berkel, Lars Spuybroek and Kas Oosterhuis, protagonist of the new Dutch architecture phenomenon. The evening video projections include the films made by Superstudio on the occasion of the famous exhibition 'Italy. The New Domestic Landscape', held at MOMA in New York, a short documentary on the construction of the 'Bordeaux' house by notorious Rem Koolhas and 'Embriologic Houses' by Greg Lynn.

COMPETITION

Within the frame of the International Festival "Architecture and New Media", iMage, institute for communication in architecture from Florence, organizes a competition for works by Slovene authors. Among all the projects dealing with communication modifications within architecture, selection will be made by a five member jury. Best three projects will be awarded a prize. All Slovene works will participate in international selection for the International Festival for Architecture in Video of Florence, in December 2000.

The award attribution will take place at the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana on the opening day of the Festival on Thursday, 19th October 2000 at 16.00. During the festival, the awarded projects will be presented at the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana.
