The Museum of Modern Art and The Municipal Art Society of New York will collaborate on a series of five two-week exhibitions, on view at the MAS Urban Center beginning October 5, featuring current projects by young architectural firms--SHoP/ Sharples Holden Pasquarelli (NYC), Reiser + Umemoto (NYC), Michael Maltzan (Los Angeles), UN Studio/Van Berkel & Bos (Amsterdam), and Foreign Office Architects (London and Tokyo). With Philip Johnson acting as curatorial consultant, The Long View, is organized by Terence Riley, Chief Curator, and Peter Reed, Curator, Department of Architecture and Design, The Museum of Modern Art, and Frank E. Sanchis III, Executive Director, The Municipal Art Society. The title The Long View refers to Mr. Johnson's unique perspective among observers of contemporary architecture. Since organizing MoMA's first architecture exhibition in 1932--Modern Architecture-International Exhibition--and establishing MoMA's Department of Architecture later that same year, Mr. Johnson has been a champion of the 'new' and has witnessed more than 70 years of the architectural scene unfold. This exhibition represents his ongoing efforts to bring new talents and new architecture to the forefront of public awareness. |

| The exhibition series opens with SHoP's exhibition of a catalogue of new techniques of digital design, on view from October 5 through 14. Titled "Do You Really Want Another Style?", the installation openly critiques and challenges the current practice and design of buildings in the digital age. The exhibition will include conceptual and analytical drawings and models. The second exhibition, on view October 20 through 28, will present Transfer Zone Arnhem designed by UN Studio/Van Berkel & Bos. Begun in 1996 with completion projected for 2007, Transfer Zone Arnhem in The Netherlands is an innovative complex that integrates transportation systems, shopping, and housing into a unified, multi-level urban development. This part of the exhibition has been made possible by the support of the collaborators of the Arnhem Central project: Bureau Mijksenaar, Trespa, ERCO, Heras Security Systems, ABT Adviesbureau, Vetrotech Saint- Gobain Benelux b.v., Huisman en van Muijen BV, Zumtobel Staff, HBG Vastgoed and HBG civiel. Michael Maltzan will present models and drawings for The Museum of Modern Art's new Long Island City facility. This project, on view November 2 through 11, gives visitors the opportunity to view these plans for the first time. The project includes the exterior of the building, the entrance, and a roofscape that will announce the building from the elevated subway line. Maltzan's dramatic design for the lobby, café, and bookstore responds to the raw and powerful space of the former industrial building and to the building's temporary role as the setting for MoMA's program of collection and international loan exhibitions from the spring of 2002 until the completion of MoMA's building project in late 2004/early 2005. Reiser + Umemoto will exhibit several projects including their competition entry for the Graz Music Theater, 1998, which inspires the firm's ongoing research into structure and space exemplified by the catenary model on display. Also in the exhibition will be new designs for a house in Sagaponack, New York, which explores the integration of landscape and building in new ways. These projects are on view November 16 through 25. The series will conclude with the Yokohama International Port Terminal designed by Foreign Office Architects (Farshid Moussavi and Alejandro Zaera-Polo), on view November 30 through December 9. The architects won the commission in an international competition in 1995, and the exhibition will show the most recent developments of the large-scale project. The Municipal Art Society is located at 457 Madison Avenue, between 50 and 51 Streets. The galleries are open Monday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., except Thursday, October 19 and Thursday, November 23. Admission is free.
