The evolution of the lifestyle in the city is a slow and complex one. Moments of clear convergence of the objectives of those who produce ideas, carry them out and those who experience their consequences, alternate with static or involved periods, which sometimes lower the good qualitative levels that were formerly reached. Those who plan to create the elements of the city that establish urban architecture, are well aware of the cyclic alternation of the pace of well-being, and generally choose the acquisition of new useful elements for the determination of virtuous evolution processes. The use of a common language among operators can be, in these particular cases, a useful way to reach common goals.
From the very beginning, our group – technology experts of Processes and Methods, for example those of Palazzo Vegni – has chosen communication as its main priority. It is not a coincidence that in the DPMPE – Dipartimento di Processi e Metodi della Produzione Edilizia, the department of processes and methods of construction – there are theoretical and practical experts of performance construction and planners of sustainable technologies, as well as physicians and technicians of environmental quality, historians, industrial designers and statisticians and economists of multi-criteria evaluation.

The common objective is to direct the results of various cultural areas towards a single target: the search of different types of architectures that are able to satisfy man’s numerous – and often conflicting – expectations. New products and technologies that take into consideration territorial and environmental systems are pursued, tested and planned. During the planning stage, new methods of evaluation, allowing the comparison of people’s needs and architectural results, are created. Data and documents are systematically collected on the Department’s activities and on those who work within its framework.

In these years, the idea of this Festival has been put forward by the desire to share common objectives and develop video and computer science technologies. This has been achieved in order to efficiently communicate concepts, plan and test their use in research, education and projects. The aim is to highlight the various problems every year, adopting any expression that can illustrate the different ways of living a built environment, the ways of conceiving it, of planning and representing it, of criticising it, using the tools and the languages of the new communication technologies in the field of computer science and audio-visuals.

The opening up towards new cultural areas – this year in the Scientific Committee of the Festival – has led to the organisation of a festival which takes into consideration not only the language of architects, but also the language of sociologists, directors and historians.
Giandomenico Amendola’s contribution has been fundamental in presenting the “conflicts” within urban scenarios. The choice of focusing on the “communication of the project” was shared by the architects and the professors of the Committee, who have always operated in this direction, and also by the director Italo Moscati and by the historian Peppino Ortoleva.

Improving the communication of the project means sharing responsibilities, from the professional skills of planners to the participation of partners, from the client to the user, to the producer. This means finding new ways of analysing – at a planning stage – the architectural features of new works, on the basis of the people who will have to live them daily or periodically. We cannot forget that the fundamental critics moved against new suburbs is the lack of identity, even when the physical aspect of the building is intact, but clearly expressing a sense of decay generated by the bad use of technologies. This means building the image and the contents of what has to be realised from the very beginning of its programming.
A comfortable foreseeable future for the city is based on a wider participation of people in planning choices, obviously selecting new forms of analysis of inputs.

Only the understanding of problems caused by today’s ways of living inside urban spaces, allows planners to elaborate new solutions, that consider the wide range of man’s activities, according to trustworthy evolution hypotheses. Thanks to the development of audio-visual and computer science technologies, today, it is already possible to study and systematically analyse the variables involved and to evaluate the benefits in the assumed solutions in a rapid way.

This year’s Festival, as usual, presents works by a number of authors that communicate different types of messages – professional and amateur films, virtual animations of works by planning professionals and by students coming from different countries, the same city and the same university department. The theme that has been chosen is: “The future and the city”. Even though it has a faraway origin – the curiosity that has always led man to make hypotheses about the future, even to make utopian wishes – we thought it could embrace the wide variety of projects and the ultimate meaning of our intentions.

Furthermore, we believe that connecting such an ancient desire of learning about the future to the evident conflicts within the cities, even in time of peace, can stimulate interesting discussions during the meetings that will present the documents in the schedule.
