Brian Heiss, Michael Morrow
The Living Projection
USA 1998, 10'50''

“The Living Projection” is a prototype for the distribution of all types of information. Books, images, sounds, and streaming data from a global context share equal status. This project presents a film library to demonstrate the possibilities of reorganizing information intensive programs of all kinds. The film library as test case, however, is particularly apt for rethinking the library in the information age, when considering the film as physical text that creates a virtual interface to convey meaning to a viewer or body of viewers. This simultaneity as a prompt for “The Living Projection”. It is important to the project that the presentation departs from conventional means of representation to embrace the possibilities the new tools available to the architect. The depiction of “The Living Projection”, a short film preceded by a cinematic trailer, uses video and digital technologies in a filmic format to blur the distinction between a project intended for material realization and a project involved in a virtual investigation. We feel this approach could suggest new possibilities for an increasingly complex and dynamic profession.

Brian Heiss is a master’s candidate at Rice School of Architecture. His recent work is based around the use of multimedia elements to expand the definitions of architecture. He received his bachelor of arts from Bennington College with a combined major in ceramics and architecture.

Michael Morrow is a master’s candidate at Rice School of Architecture. He holds a degree in painting and has worked variously in the arts, film, and design. His work in architecture looks for new ways to create coincidence among different disciplines and media.
