Bernhard Franken (ABB Architekten)
The IAA 99 Project. Post Natural Design. Frankfurt Motor Show 1999. Pavilion for BMW
Deutschland 2000, 5’

Designing an exhibition is more a question of communication than architecture. Our design is not a container for information but communication itself. Starting point of the EXPO2000 Project for the BMW Group was consequently not a program or function but a briefing of a communication concept called Clean Energy. Clean Energy is the initiative of the BMW Group to use hydrogen as the fuel for the future of driving. The hydrogen technology is completely developed by BMW, the first cars are produced, but a network of gas stations and hydrogen produced by sustainable energy is not available. So it is rather a political than a technical question BMW wants to promote as part of the EXPO2000. Form, content and presentation was completely left to us to develop. In a collaboration with the Deutsche Museum Verkehrszentrum the Clean Energy Exhibition is an official international Project of the EXPO2000. As site for this project the former Munich fairground in the heart of the city next to the "October Fest Wies´n" was chosen. Since most of the former Messe is going to be replaced, so far the area is more resembling a wasteland. All around 3 protected old halls heavy construction work is going on. The halls themselves, built in 1908, are in a terrible condition. Since our Clean Energy exhibition is lasting for 5 month we decided to emphasise the temporary status of the project.

Bernhard Franken runs his own office in Frankfurt/Germany and works in a Partnership as ABB Architekten/Bernhard Franken. His architecture is exploring the impact of digital media on the complete process from design to manufacturing. Born in 1965, he studied architecture at the TU Darmstadt/Germany; he got his digital offspin in 1993 working on an interactive media installation called ‘Flow equilibrium’ about the city as media. In 1995-1996 as artist in residence at the Institut for New Media Frankfurt, a former branch of the Städel Art School, he developed the concept of Hypertecture, leading to three projects. Hypertecture describes the design of information in three-dimensional environments on the internet. Instead of using a 2D desktop metaphor these environments function through architectural typological elements. As text turns into hypertext, architecture turns into hypertecture. Part of this research led to a unique design approach called Parametric Design. Form is created with the help of special effect software like Maya from AliasWavefront. A set of chosen parameters and selected algorithms are implied in a iterative process to derive the form. The parameters are chosen from the briefing of the client and the surrounding context. This design method was applied in a number of projects of which three have been executed since 1999 (The Bubble IAA 99 BMW, brandscape Geneva 2000 BMW and The Wave Expo2000 BMW). In collaboration with ABB Architekten Frankfurt the execution of the digital designed projects led to a workflow based on a concept of digital continuity. A master-model serves as the base, from which laser-sintering models, renderings, drawings, finite element simulations and even the final building are derived. From 1996 till 1999 he was teaching as Assistant Professor at CAD in Architecture TU Darmstadt. 1999 – 2000 he was appointed Guest-professor at GhK Universität Gesamthochschule Kassel, Fachbereich 12 Architektur; Fachgebiet Darstellende Geometrie/CAD.
