 Studio 5+1 Opening ceremony of the New University Campus in Savona – 23rd May Nuova Systema Italy 2000, 6’ The architectural work is based on the restructuring of the surroundings of the former Bligny barracks into a new University Campus and a multipurpose centre for productive resources and for advanced training. The plan, carried out by 5+1 partners, has entailed the general renewal of all of the buildings in the area. The target of the plan is to transform a structure built for strict army education from the point of view of its functions, of spatial characteristics and of its psychological impact. The transformation would, thus, imply a new habitat with a real and symbolic link to the urban fabric of the neighbourhood. Another objective is to underline the environmental characteristics of the area with respect to the new function. Through the large windows, built with Vitrall, Nuova Systema’s curtain wall system, the lush vegetation finally enters what used to be dim and dull buildings. Reflected colour and light pervade the spaces, gently shining on the glass and the new millennium triumphantly enters through polychrome harmony and futuristic geometrical forms. The video is about the opening of the first building on 23rd may 2000 and it is divided into two parts; the first more institutional part of the video underlines the solemnity and the importance of the event, thanks to the visit of the President of the Republic, Mr Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. The second illustrative part of the video offers a general panorama of the building. The main focus is on the windows and the specific coupler system. On the whole, the video does not offer technical nor descriptive details. The main aim is to convey a general idea of the work and of its importance. Studio 5+1 was set up in 1995 and the various partners live in Genoa and work between Genoa and France. They all graduated at the University of Architecture in Genoa and have all had previous professional and university experience in other firms and have participated in various national and international competitions. The firm’s activities are mainly focused on town planning and graphic architecture with a specific inclination towards the contemporary city, it’s public areas and its derelict sites. Nuova Systema was set up in 1989 and it designs and sells its own curtain wall systems. |
