Blanca Castañeda
The Transient Gaze
Espana 1999, 12'

Departing from the thesis that "modern eyes move", this video explores the construction of each frame of an architectural promenade and how can the sequence be designed and anticipated. Vision in Le Corbusier's architecture is always tied to movement; the point of view in modern architecture is never fixed, but always in motion. Perception of space through the camera lens is an interpolation between the view of a perspective drawing (the existence of frame, picture plane, the necessity for composition) and the fluid movement of the naked eye. As a mediated product, film can reveal aspects of reality unattainable by the viewer of a still image or the observer of the raw physical existence. The frame is a human construct and doesn't exist in nature at all, therefore it is used here as an instrument to study the application of perspective constructs in the building subject of study. The structure of this video consists of seven sections, which investigate specific issues about the use of perspective in the building. Each section contains several sequences, most in the format of pairings -dichotomies- to make evident different modes of perception of space. Two frames of video playing parallel to each other also give the possibility of creating a third one, producing alignments and continuities or paradoxical oppositions.
