Blanca Castañeda
Classified Ads
Espana 1999, 7’30”

The future of a city is its people. The city is not just the built environment or the infrastructure that supports hundreds of thousands of people living together in any given space, but also the energy and stamina produced by all combined factors. This project started as an intent to find an alternative way of mapping the city of Boston, tracing its transformations in that "space" which is not so physically evident. The "Classified Ads" section of a newspaper tells a great amount of information about the city they belong to, although each advertisement seems to be very succinct. It is necessary to trace the printed phone numbers -usually the only information that ties the abstract advertisement to a geographical site- and map them, relating different activities to a specific area of Boston. In such an apparently conservative city, it is interesting to notice the phenomena going on behind the ordered Victorian facades, which reveal upbeat people, fashionable uses or new activities that shape the future of the city, passing seemingly unnoticed. This sequence of videos is part of an interactive CD-ROM, which has as its interface a newspaper; the user can read it, choose a piece advertisement and animate it, launching a short video. The videos wander around different environments, scouting with curiosity and revealing within their structure, which part of the city is staged.
