Alvar Aalto - a Vision of a Better World
YLE, Finland 1998, 54’

The documentary “Alvar Aalto - a Vision of a Better World” focuses on Alvar Aalto’s career in the latter half of the 1930s, when he disassociated himself from Rational European Functionalism and set off along a path of his own, giving international architecture a new, humanistic and nature-oriented perspective. The documentary gives an account of Aalto’s creative process in an attempt to demonstrate how his architecture came about. A turning-point in Aalto’s thinking became Villa Mairea, a family estate in Western Finland 1938-39. The documentary constructs a portrait of Alvar Aalto the man and the artist. It includes archive films never screened before, letters and interviews with contemporaries and experts on international architecture.

Eeva-Angelina Vuorenpää, born in 1939, has studied Humanistic Sciences at Helsinki University, film and documentary at The University of Art and Design, Helsinki, and at the Radio and TV Institute, Helsinki. She is working on TV 1 at Finnish Broadcasting Company as producer and director. She has made several long TV documentaries on the Finnish literature, arts and architecture. Many of them have been screened on documentary and film festivals and exhibitions and broadcast on international TV channels. She produced several videos e.g. for the Alvar Aalto exhibition “Between humanism and materialism” in The Museum of Modern Art New York 1998.
