Salvatore Covelli
Between the city and the river: a terminal in a park in the southern area of Florence
University of Architecture in Florence, Italy 2000, 7’

The former F.lli Franchi plant is still standing in the area of the plan which is characterised by the presence of the Varlungo viaduct and the river Arno, that has gradually become a mere morphological presence. The objective of the plan is to create a multipurpose structure that should contain not only a terminal for transport to the city centre but also an area for expositions, economic activities, services and accommodation facilities. The main aim is to improve this specific area and the entire area of access to Florence via the Aretina route. The intervention is part of a larger framework concerning a certain part of the city of Florence that should contain all the new structures plus the pre-existing ones. One of the main objectives of the plan is to create a link between the city and the river, a sort of reconciliation that re-examines the banks of the river and brings them closer to the dweller of the city. This will entail the construction of certain areas near the river where people can stop and have a continuous visual relation with the river, from both inside and outside the structure. The plan is being developed mainly underground where one can find the various environments that give access to the multipurpose structure and to the three auditoriums that stand under the surface levelling. In the other three buildings that stand outside there are exposition and services areas and accommodation facilities. The idea of facing curtain walls with aluminium sun blinds originates from the desire to maintain a visual relation with the river and to create a structural separation between the ‘skin’ of the building and the actual structure. Thanks to this compromise a very small amount of invasive materials (such as reinforced concrete) has been utilised, thus favouring the use of building materials and techniques more similar to bioclimatic architecture.

Salvatore Covelli was born in 1970 and graduated at the University of Architecture in Florence. He has always been interested in the virtual representation of architecture and, whilst at university, he took a number of exams concerning the use of new means for digital planning. He has worked with a number of architecture studios and now teaches CAD and the 3D representation techniques. He participated in the 4th edition of the International Festival of Architecture in 1999 with another important architect, Mr M. Meossi.
