Marc Maurer, Nicole Maurer (MAURER Engineering Architecture and Media)
STRIP
Nederland 2000, 3’05”

The short video "STRIP" is completely, from musical composition to model and actual realization, arranged by the MAURER office. All this to present a simple idea: as clothing was once created and innovated to keep people warm and dry, architecture was developed on the basis of the same needs. Today the whole fashion industry is founded on image and details. MAURER believes that architecture could make more use of the techniques and tactics of this industry to generate innovations that could contribute to our cultural habitat. Using a dress to cover a building, as shown in the video, automatically introduces the border between the inside and the outside and also between the inside face and the outside face of the material. These sides switch within the installation: during the performance Nicole (black clothing) had to switch sides from the inside to the outside and Claudette (the model carrying the white clothing) vice versa. This turns out to be also an elegant way of preserving the model’s privacy, as we can only guess her nakedness at the end of the presentation. ... Somehow we managed to use fashion related themes within this architectural installation! The music for the clip was especially composed by “Sundance Sound Show” in cooperation with Marc Maurer. Claudette helped us as a model. The “Architectuurproducties VOF” studio has been used to digitally master the video. All filming and mastering was done by MAURER. The photos were taken by Francois van Eyck.

Marc and Nicole Maurer are graduated architects and are interested in the combination of the design fields of architectural theory and building technology. They work together in their office “MAURER Engineering Architecture and Media”. MAURER translates social changes into design concepts, consequently representing a sharply defined, 'Zeitgeist'-related statement even to the level of detail. Apart from architectural designs this attitude generates solutions in other design fields like graphics, interactive media and furniture. Their projects are often media-related and visual culture plays an important role.
