Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten BV (Roberto E. Meyer)
Head Office ING Group, Amsterdam 1997 – 2002
Nederland 2000, 2’16“

The ING Group is a Dutch financial institution in operation worldwide, which, with a staff of over eighty thousand people in around sixty countries, is active in the field of banking, insurance and capital management. At first sight, the location for a new head office might seem rather unusual. Owing to the long, narrow site alongside the Amsterdam ring road, a standard office building was not feasible. Moreover, the building would be situated along the border dividing two very different areas: on one side the heavily urbanised Zuidas (new office developments along the southern section of the ring road) with its congestion, noise and air pollution; and on the other side the green area around the Nieuwe Meer. Because of this siting, the building is raised on piles of nine to twelve metres in height. From the motorway, therefore, the view of the area behind the building is maintained. In addition, the roof of the building is inclined, rising to its highest point on the city side. The new head office is intended to symbolise the modern world of banking and insurance in a dynamic and rapidly changing international network. Transparency, innovation, environmental awareness and openness were the prime considerations in its design. Characteristic for the design is the innovative climate-control system of the building. Elements that ensure an energy-efficient building are a second skin (natural ventilation), an advanced air-conditioning system (double-skin facade), and an aquifer (heat and cold storage underground) in combination with heat pumps. The interior of the building has a rich diversity of atmospheres and an alternation of closed and open spaces

Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten BV. In 1984 Roberto E. Meyer (1959, Colombia) and Jeroen W. van Schooten (1960, The Netherlands) established Meyer en Van Schooten Architects in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Both graduated in 1991 at the Academy of Architecture, Arnhem. Their first projects, from 1982 on, were the conversion of offices, houses and showrooms and the building of several private houses. In 1990 they won the silver medal of the Prix de Rome. Since 1990 the office was commissioned with an increasing number of significant projects. Two projects were elementary for the growing reputation of the office: the masterplan for KEMA in Arnhem (1991) and a housing complex in Vespuccistraat, Amsterdam (1993-1995). After the completion of the masterplan KEMA gave additional assignments for the urban plan, various buildings on the KEMA grounds and the KEMA Head office (1992-2000). After the design for housing in Amsterdam the office designed several stimulating housing projects. For their design of six housing complexes and a residential cluster for the elderly at the GWL Site in Amterdam (1993-1996) they received the Merkelbach prize 2000 and for their design of Quadrant Housing at the Jasonpark in Rotterdam (1996-1999) they won the Woningbouwkwaliteitsprijs (prize for Housing Quality) 1999. During the nineties the portfolio of projects becomes varied: public housing, villas, urban designs, shopping centres, office complexes, and schools. In 1997 the office was chosen to design the new Head office of the ING Group in Amsterdam. Their ambitious and special design will be a landmark and gate for the Zuidas in Amsterdam.
