Hearing Architecture
University of São Paolo
Brazil 1999, 6’10”

This video project is the final task of an Extension Course in Architecture named “Draw, Design and Architecture”, given by Professor Rafael Perrone, at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Our team considers “Hearing Architecture” as an exercise on how human perception influences the interpretation of architecture. We have centered our studies and researches on the Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The architecture of the Museum is very exciting and different from what we are used to see. Not only the building, but also the drawings and sketches, reveal, each time we see them, new and different perspectives. Before the video, our main question was: what is real in this architecture? The only things we are sure of, after this video, are that perception and interpretation are the keys to understand architecture, and that there is not separation between the object and the subject. Architecture only happens in a dynamic way of exchange between the building and the person who sees it. That's why different feelings and links to one's life poetry can be created by architecture. And the more architecture opens the perception, the better it is. But why hearing? Because we believe there is a music that comes from architecture, and to hear it, one must let the message that comes from the outside reach the inside. After making this video, each one of us is still asking: who sees through my eyes?
