Paolo Vitali
Outskirsts. To Mario Sironi
Italy 1997, 2’50”

Within the framework of university training we have discussed the idea of a video representation of a certain territory, seen as a daily context of our living. Our study is being carried out on Milan, an urban experience for all the students of the course. The representation - processing of this experience (the actual subject of the study) has therefore had, within common geographical references, an inevitable subjective approach and, indeed, this represents the interpretative approach of the whole context. I have personally worked on the outskirts, on the ‘threshold’, the preamble-promise of the city. I have analysed the city’s possibility to still define itself as a city, (a place of meanings and belonging). I have also studied the potentials of the video technique as a tool that can be used to study and carry out research on the characteristics of the city, juxtaposing images of daily life (documentary-like) and seized images (evocative). This way of documenting the city creates a connection between a purely descriptive approach, (careful attention is given to signs, reality, material as a motionless system, memory, contemporary traces of the past), and a more ‘literary’ approach that considers certain urban elements that characterise the idea of a city according to categories of thought and culture. “The city is redundant: it repeats itself so that something will stick in the mind. (...) Memory is redundant: it repeats the signs so that the city can begin to exist” (Italo Calvino, “ Invisible Cities”).

Paolo Vitali was born in 1971. He obtained a scientific diploma at high school and is now studying at the University of Architecture at the Politecnico in Milan. He is currently doing courses on planning and, in particular, on the aspects of urban analysis, even through new video technologies, and on the idea of a plan within the framework of the well-established city. He is writing his thesis on the urban restructuring of the historical part of Madrid. Between 1997 and 1999 he worked with a firm in Milan called “@@@”. In 1999 he did a stage at the “atelier de Portzamparc” in Paris. In 1997, during a course on stage designing, (held by Professor M. Galbiati), he created the video “Outskirts”.
