Switzerland 2000

With the beginning of the third millenium, the City, which has not completely sustained society evolutions, won't be able to develop according to the models of the second millenium. The City will have to morph into another entity. Four hypothesis of development have been suggested here. 1.Urban Expansion: with more than 6 billion human beings, the City won't be able to lawlessly expand itself any longer. Regulated by a “theoretical limited skyline”, the future City will develop an altitude strata system. 2. Urban Structure: compared to energy and pollution problems, the City will develop new structures. Each block will become an autonomous factory, which will manage the cycle of production, consumption and waste. 3. Urban Communications: thanks to the computer, the City, which will be no longer able to assimilate modern material transports, will develop other virtual communication systems for each activity and it will eventually liberate urban spaces. 4. Urban Spaces: with the end of street and corner concepts, the City will develop new public spaces in the old urban empty spaces and in the new urban spaces, which will have been produced amongst new strata.

Didier Castelli was born in 1969, in Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland. He has studied at the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne EPFL, at the architecture department, where he won the CFV Prize for the best project of the fourth year of studies (with the visiting Professor Cruz-Ortiz). He also won the SIA Diploma Prize, in 1994 (Professors A. Cantafora, L. Merlini), the ARDITI Prize for the best project of the diploma “Virtual Theatre”. He has worked as assistant in the EPFL. In 1998, with 4 associates, he won the third Prize of the EUROPAN 5 competition. He is currently working for the Bernard Tschumi, Luca Merlini e Ventura agency in Lausanne (Interface Flon project) and in private firm. He participated in the Second stage, Montbrillant college Competition in Geneva. His project “City third Millenium” has been selected for the Biennial of Venice 2000. His project “Stratopolis” has been selected for the FEIDAD Award 2000 (in progress).
