Randall Teal (Teal Studio)
The Magic Theater
USA 2000, 8’30”

The site for this project is in Prague. It is an infill situation that is bound on three sides by buildings, and on one by an historic façade. This façade is an important element in my design. It is history, and a symbol of memory and its role in our lives. A second façade, made of glass and steel, is inserted to represent the present. The two facades together become a single composition, inseparable just as the continuum of past-present-future. These elements are visible to serve as a reminder within the urban fabric, and function as a threshold marking the passage into the introspective realm of “The Magic Theater”. The experience of “The Magic Theater” is a jorney toward consciiousness. Emotion is key, so that one does not view with sympathy, but with compassion – a shared feeling. Through compassion, an event such as the Holocaust can be seen not as a collection of victims, but as a collection of people, just like ourselves. Through compassion a path can be cleared for collective understanding and reconciliation. “The Magic Theater” is a place of memory, clarity, and healing. It asks one to face ghosts of the past and apply their lessons to our present. The goal of this project is to show not tell, in hopes of facilitating experiential, emotional, and spiritual connections.

Randall Teal was born in Dallas, Texas in 1971. He lived in Dallas, London, Copenhagen, Salt Lake City Utah, and Oakland California before settling in Eugene Oregon. He received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Oregon. He then undertook Post Bachelor work in Fine Art for 2 years before attending the University of Oregon School of Architecture. He received his Master of Interior Architecture in June of 2000. This past summer, He oversaw the construction for his design of an addition to a small photography studio, and taught Design Studio at the University of Oregon. Currently, he is pursuing employment opportunities in Europe. He continues to pursue his interest in human emotion and the exploration of the intangible through oil painting, a medium in which he has had several recent shows. His architectural interests include conceptual design, adaptive reuse, as well as material use and detailing.
