Sergio Sampaolo
Francesco Borromini. Opere
Jumbles
Italy 1999

The CD was created for the following exhibitions: “Borromini and the baroque universe” held in Rome from 15/12/1999 to 12/2/2000, at the Exhibition Centre and “Borromini-Architek im barocken Rom” held in Vienna, at the Albertina im Akademiehof, from 12/4/2000 to 25/6/20000. A number of people and institutions worked on this CD among which, architects, art historians, Italian and Austrian computer science experts and the Museum of graphic art of the Albertina im Akademiehof in Vienna. The objective of the CD is to offer a variety of historical and critical information on Francesco Borromini and his activities as an architect. It is also analyses some of his works with the idea of spreading information about his activities. That is why the CD is made up of a biography concerning all of his activities, with interactive image links, glossaries and monographs on his main works. In particular ten of his famous works are thoroughly analysed with a number of different means. Apart from the monographs with image and glossary links, it is also possible to see the original sketches of the works, the CAD drawings created for the exhibitions, comments and criticism on Borromini made by his contemporaries, short films and specific and general bibliographies. There are also web sites, three dimension animations which offer a better understanding of the architectural structure and the cultural models of seven of his greatest works.

Sergio Sampaolo graduated in architecture and wrote a thesis on “Multimedia Analysis of Saint Ivo at the Sapienza”. He was one of the first students at the University “La Sapienza” in Rome to present a thesis on a CD instead of paper. He believes that computers are extremely important for people working in the field of architecture or studying the subject. He has always been interested in three-dimensional analysis because he believes that it enables people to analyse, disassemble and mentally create volumes in space. He actually worked with a group of archaeologists of the University in Perugia, on a CD about the excavations of the Sanctuary in Gravisca, near Tarquinia. The CD ranges from the first findings to the cataloguing of the sections and the three-dimensional reconstruction of the various historical periods. He has also worked with N! Studio at the Biennial in Venice in 1996. Lastly, he has collaborated with Paolo Cuneo, a university professor who teaches restoration at the department of Engineering at the University of Aquila, on metric plotting and typological analysis of the mosques in the Comor Islands.
