UdA - Ufficio di Architettura (Walter Camagna, Massimiliano Camoletto, Andrea Marcante)
La città del terzo millennio
Italy 2000, 2’41”

The metropolitan condition is an intrinsic quality of human beings. It has been spreading through space and time by means of more and more extreme relationship phenomena. It has been shaped according to the net model and the labyrinth of knowledge. It is a single place which rises there where matter and information flow simultaneously, where space withdraws into its own dimensions, proof against the passing of time. The metropolitan condition has always introduced into nature the pattern of a predominant cultural reference. Today this pattern has reached the highest level of saturated solution than ever before. The essence of the contemporary metropolis now lies in the saturation of a leading but no longer predominant culture. It excludes conflicting relationships founded on the occupation of territory. It includes within itself the porousness and the opportunities to grasp its differences. Mobility and global communication have given rise to a very high urban metabolism which, therefore, consumes space and time, mental and material resources. More and more frequently the elements tangle and mingle in a continuous generic present. A hyperconnected present, a game of ordinary and planetary zoom. More space is required to distinguish one thing from another, a disconnection, A material and mental break, a void not to be filled in. The void also alludes to what is not immediately visible, to what does not appear on the surface and to the distance between the inside and the outside. A more permeable architecture and a more transparent city can shorten this distance, can halt the stream in order to have time to reflect. A vacuum. A surface from which the background can emerge. The useful distance for an independent and critical awareness. The slowing-down which is necessary in order to distinguish the panorama. In the city of the third millennium it is possible to identify a different essence in the void.

UdA Ufficio di Architettura was created in Turin by Walter Camagna, Massimiliano Camoletto and Andrea Marcante in 1992. Today it is made up of a number of designers, graphic experts and engineers, among which Giorgio Domenino and Maria Beatrice Picco, both architects. The Office of Architecture works within the field of interior design, exhibition planning, private and public architecture, restoration and upgrading of urban areas. In 1998 the Office of Architecture opened a second branch in Milan together with Dall’Acqua Design Office. The Office carries out research in architecture and has participated in a number of competitions. Various projects and works of the Office have been shown in architecture exhibitions and published in international magazines.
