LAR
Roperies and cables. Preparations for the rope factory of the Venice Arsenal
LAR-DPA-IUAV
Italy 2000, 3’

The future of the city also lies in the re-appropriation of its large buildings, whose real function has been lost in time. The rope factory of the Arsenal is one of the largest buildings in Venice, however it is only occasionally used for the exhibitions of the Biennial. The plan for the re-use of the building, shown in the video, is an integral part of an agreement between the BTicino and five Italian universities. This agreement concerns the study of possible technological adjustments of the equipment used for energy conduction. The University Institute of Architecture in Venice is involved with a number of educational programmes concerning the recovery and the fitting of the rope factory for a permanent exhibition. Four different solutions have been envisaged for the introduction of the technological equipment in this fragile historical building. The first solution is based on the visual exhibition of the technological equipment, (displayed equipment); the second solution is a control system of the quality of artificial light, (controlled dark); the third is based on an exhibition structure with extendable units, (dynamic space); fourthly, the technological equipment is fit into the flooring, (hidden equipment). There are also photographs of the rope factory taken by Marco Cresci and pictures of works that have very similar features, such as fragments of the G. B Piranesi Prison, the anatomical tables of Vesalio, light environments by Lucio Fontana. The video was shown at VII International Architecture Exhibition held in Venice, USA pavilion, as part of the project “A regola d’arte/ State of Art”, organised by Enzo Biffi Gentili and produced by BTicino.

LAR is the Laboratory for Research in Architectural Planning of the Architectural Planning Department of the University Institute of Architecture in Venice, (LAR-DPA-IUAV). This is the laboratory that carries out research in the field of new digital technologies applied to the architecture project. It was set up in 1994 by the Department and it is divided into three sections; CAM-Models, CAD, Multimedia. Activities have been based on the planning research carried out by teachers, among which research on the central areas of Berlin and Potsdam, the former industrial areas in Marghera and Mestre, and on architecture reconstruction such as the perspective Gallery of Palazzo Spada in Rome. Models and graphic editing have been produced and interactive CDs and videos have been presented at national and international exhibitions. Lar is headed by a scientific committee made up of the following university teachers: F. Pittaluga (scientific director), V. Spigai, P. Merlini, C. Lamanna, D. Bolla, L. Testa, C. Trevisan. The staff is made up of : G. Testi (tecnical director), C. Ferro e M. Ridolfi (CAM-Models section); A. Sdegno e E. Garbin (CAD section); R. Grossa (Multimedia section). The director Alessandro Favaron, who is head of the technical section of the cinema-video department of Fabrica, contributed to the making of the laboratory’s video.
