Jang Yoon Gyoo
Digital Nature
Korea 2000

The design of the futuristic park starts from the hypothesis that the infra-elements discarded or ignored in the city should be recovered. It is assumed that a closed gas plant and such hidden infras as its gas pipe lines can be reinstated to be new environmental infras supplying purified air to the city. The model is an Amsterdam canal constructed on a closed gas plant. The waterways of the city will be guided to penetrate the site in order to be filtered by the site in a natural way. The purification will not only be physical. The filtering mechanism itself will be landscaped. It is assumed that by seeing it, the population’s interest in the environment will be reawakened: they will be thus purified spiritually.

Jang Yoon Gyoo graduated from the Seoul National University in Korea in 1987; he completed the Master course in Architecture at the Seoul National University in 1990. He obtained an award from the T.S.K Architectural Travelling Fellowship in 1993, and a Honorable Mention in the Shinkenchiku Takiron International Competition 1994. He became the principal of Artech Architects & Partners in 1995; from 1997 to 1999 he was a professor at the Kaywon School of Art and Design. From 1998 to 2000 he directed the Design Pool at HEERIM Architects & Engineers. His work was selected for Exhibition & Publication in the UIA International Competition, held in Barcelona in 1996; he was awarded the First Prize in the Design Center Competition 1997, in the International Competition for the Embassy of Egypt in Seoul, 1998, in the Competition for the Contemporary Art Museum in Teagu, 1999; he also obtained awards in the Seoul Metropolitan Award 1999 and in the Venice Biennale 2000. He is now concentrating on his Atelier “Jang Yoon Gyoo” for Theory & Experimentation.
