SDR: Object
Spain 1999, VIDEO 14’15”

“SDR: Object”, entails a summary of the work carried out in the course Sistemas de Representación, at the Escuela Tècnica i Superior d'Arquitectura La Salle, Barcelona, in the academic year 1999/00. The course is structured in six themes: text, figure, object, image, space and light. Each one of these concepts stands for a conceptual mode -a system of representation- within which material and intellectual objects are conceived. The theme “SDR: Object” is dedicated to the construction of three-dimensional objects using three formal languages: line, plane and solid. One of the goals of the course is to train students to think, to create, to express and to communicate ideas using the computer. However, the use of computer technology does not exclude so-called traditional techniques. Rather, the goal is to establish a fruitful dialogue between the two: between digital models and physical models; computer drawings and sketches; renderings and photography; animations and video... We want the student to master the different techniques technologies, in order to choose the most appropriate ones to express an idea, to develop a concept. Thus, an understanding of the relationship between idea and representation becomes a fundamental goal of this course. Exercises are carried out individually and collectively. A web-based environment named “SDR: Networking” (http://www.salleurl.edu/sdr) has been developed specifically for this course. The purpose of this system is to contribute to the development of creativity in collaboration. With this system, students can access and further develop the work of their peers; they can establish relationships among the different works; associate concepts to the creations of other students; and develop collectively forms and spaces.

Leandro Madrazo, is Professor at the Escola Tècnica i Superior d’Arquitectura La Salle-Universitat Ramon Llull, in Barcelona, where he teaches Architectural Design, Representation and Digital Media. He got his Architect´s degree at he Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and studied later, as Fulbright scholar, in the Master of Architecture programs from the University of California at Los Angeles and Harvard University. During ten years, he was teaching and researching at the Institute for Architecture and CAAD, in the Swiss Federal Institute (ETH Zurich), where he obtained his Ph.d. degree. He has written extensively about the integration of computing in the education of architecture in papers and articles published in specialized conferences and journals. He is the head of the research group ARC (Architecture - Representation - Computation) and head of the Ph.d. program at Arquitectura La Salle. His current research is oriented towards the developing of web-based systems for collaborative learning and design processes. The teaching environment “SDR: Networking”, shown in this exhibition, is one of the results of this research work.
