Alessio Talarico, Paola Marrone
L’Oltrarno nascosto
Italy 2000, 11’

The plan goes from Viale Ariosto to the River in Florence, it follows the direction of the walls, it goes towards Torrino St. Rosa and it ends on the bank of the river Arno, near the weir, and it is visually projected in Ognissanti Square. The idea of a metaphysical cape was taken from the nearby Jewish cemetery, where the silent green surface refers to an underground life. In the same way our plan is developed underground; the “green carpet” that we introduced is creased and enlightened. This announces the existence of hypogeous spaces. There are three levels in the plan; the road plan leads to the two underground parking levels. At a level of 5 mt, near the Porta, we have created an exhibition area, and a night spot going towards Viale Aleardi. The main entrance to the exhibition area is like a crack along the ancient walls. The idea of being able to discover them in the hypogeous spaces was the main aim of the plan, together with the theme of light that created communication between the various levels and the outside environment. Our idea was to give the suburb a green area in order to ‘socialise’. A green area to stop and think, while the exhibition centre and the night spot are the places to meet and talk.

Alessio Talarico was born in Catanzaro (1971) and Paola Marrone was born in Florence (1972). They both graduated at the University of Architecture in Florence and wrote their thesis on Planning. In 1998, at the Institute of Industrial Technologies, they obtained a CAD design diploma. In 1999 they both collaborated with ITALFER for high speed in Florence. At the moment they are working within the General Engineering Staff on the reconstruction of the Mostar Bridge in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
