La sperimentazione del nuovo. Giovani architetti italiani: un incontro sulla condizione contemporanea
Italy 2000, 10’

An event organised by in/arch, the National Institute of Architecture. Planned by Livio Sacchi, within the framework of the VII International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennial, “Less Aesthetics More Ethics”. The event in Venice led to major acknowledgement of young Italian architecture. The type of architecture carried out by architects and groups of people working on planning, aged between 30 and 40. The meeting was a “paperless” one, that is a meeting where there were no graphic formulations on paper or slides. Only Cds with digital images, renderings and animations, were used. The selection of the participants was made by Inarch on the basis of a series of former experiences and, in particular, considering Gerico, the exhibition organised within the framework of the Biennial of young artists in Europe and in the Mediterranean, organised by the town council in Rome at the Mattatoio in June 1999. The event was organised by the national secretariat of Inarch together with Beatrice Fumarola. This event has led to a number of interesting considerations. Firstly, we believe that the work of a generation that, quite predictably, has chosen the digital dimension as the main representative tool of the architectural project, has been highlighted. Without overestimating, we believe that a major part of the projects refer not only to digital ‘imagerie’, but are also planned, from the point of view of space, using advanced software of three-dimensional models. Furthermore, the use of the digital system places this generation directly in competition with other generations in Europe, Asia and the United States. The gap that in the past decades has separated Italy from other countries has gradually disappeared. However, even though young Italian architects are quite different from the former generations and have overcome the linguistic barrier that separated them from the rest of Europe, it must be stated that the gap was also due to the actual specific aspects of architecture. The most interesting aspect of all of this digital planning production is the fact that it does not become architectural production. It remains in the virtual realm. That is why it is often defined as telematics, meaning that it is not only created by a computer, but it seems as if it has a strong connection with communication on-line.

Livio Sacchi is an architect and a professor of Architectural Design at the University of Architecture in Pescara. He has written a number of essays and he lives and works in Rome.
