BKM (Kelvin Tan, Moses Tan, Béatrix de la Tour d'Auvergne)
City-Habitat-Interface
Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture, Parigi (Atelier Odile Decq), France 2000, 9'50"

Our objective is to explore the notion of Interface between the individual and the urban community, by reflecting upon these 4 themes: technology, communication & networks, real-time adaptability, and urban sensibilities. The Scale of the chosen interface is that of the habitat, because it occupies a central position in the consideration of critical issues related to society, urbanism, and humankind. In this search for new ideas, we seek to propose a new system, a new form of "City-Habitat-Interface", which tries to adapt to changes and to larger scales, such as those of the city. Spaces in the building adapt, in real-time, to the lifestyles and needs of its inhabitants, thus fully maximizing the potential of each square meter of space. Every individual can thus benefit from having a larger surface area, in a high-density urban housing condition. The movement is enabled by electro-magnetic forces between the modules and the structure. Variations of repulsion and attraction forces, permit horizontal and vertical movement, as well as the formation of complex modular forms. By “City-Habitat-Interface”, we seek to evoke a "Socio-Urbano-Architectural" discourse, which includes the notions of equality, generosity and exchange. This Habitat-Interface In the form of an ‘intelligent’ building which redistributes space according to its availability, without prejudice, nor any form of favoritism, is thus also a step towards a social utopia that shall hopefully be not too far away. On a larger scale, the "City-Habitat-Interface" shall take form of ‘intelligent’ buildings, which communicate dynamically with each other in a ‘real-time’, ‘intelligent’ urban grid. This creates a fluid and dynamic architecture in the future known as an intelligent, dynamic, real-time, efficient city, free of social prejudice.

Founded in April 2000, BMK is a team of three students from Ecole Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris founded in Atelier Odile Decq . The theme of the atelier was to investigate the notion of Interface in architecture. The result of intensive research work and brainstorming led to the creation of an architectural film called " City-Habitat-Interface". They are interested in incorporating dynamic processes in the conceptual and design stage culminating in architectural presentation through film and video. Currently, they are working on other interfaces and ‘secret life’ projects and can be found at www.karmalounge.com/bmk.
